I took Nikita to the beach this morning at 6am - she had a lovely dip, so of course needed to be bathed to get the salt off when we got home. I took my eye off her for ONE second, and naturally, she rolled in the dirt. Mud from head to tail. Bathed her again, slipped her harness on and tied her up. Feeling sure she would dry off and stay clean, I went about getting breakfast. When I came outside again, the harness was empty and Nikita was kicking her legs up, rolling on her back in the dusty dirt again. So here she is, in all her dirty glory, my first shot with the new 350D and Tokina 28-70mm lens. Nikita is a full breed Bahamian long haired potcake, and weighs about 90lbs. No PP, just a little unsharp mask.

OK, I know that begs an explanation. In the Bahamas we have a dish called peas and rice (tomato paste, pigeon peas, onions, sweet peppers and white rice) - it get cooked until there is a "cake" coating the pot. The end result is a rice dish that is a mottled brown and white in colour. Most of the stray dogs here are mottled brown and white, some are tri coloured like Nikita. People often put out the leftovers from the rice pot - the pot cake - for the dogs to eat. Hence they became known as potcakes. About a year or so ago the Kennel Club decided to recognize the potcake as an official breed - characteristics include ears that often stick out at right angles from the head giving the dogs a look something like Gizmo! Most of the potcakes are short haired, but there are some longhaired ones. Nikita is rather an unusual one, as she is extremely well fed, in case you didn't notice:oops: , and weighs in the region of 90lbs. The vet refuses to lift her onto his scales until I put her on a diet, which een gonna happen, because my mother in law insists of feeing Niki hotdogs and potcake when my back is turned:evil: Nikita is 11 years old now.
