how well does a 2x or 1.4x TC work with this lens?

debating if i should get one of those, or save up for a 100-400

A 1.4TC M2 (those currently on the market) is a good addon for a 70-200mm f2.8 IS L. The lens loses only one stop of light and gains a noticable amount of focal length (up to a 280mm now) whilst still retaining a high level of sharpness and optical quality and with minimal degradation to AF speed and accuracy.

In short its a combo that works very well indeed.

The 2*TC however, whilst still retaining AF, is far more fickle item to use. In short in my experience, I found that whilst it worked with the lens, the AF slowed and became more prone to hunting, but worse the optical quality took a significant drop. In the end it was a combo I used only sparingly a few times because whilst it worked in a pinch it just wasn't that desirable a result.
Far as I know the only 70-200mm that can really take a 2*TC and work well is the 70-200mm f2.8 IS L M2 which with a 2*TC gets to an image quality similar to the 100-400mm at the 400mm mark.

Thus if you are after a 100-400mm type zoom lens go for the 100-400mm L. However if you want a stunning 70-200mm and a good 140-400mm lens then the 70-200mm f2.8 IS L is your need (with its sadly much higher price - you do pay to have that stella 70-200mm f2.8 performance.

Tools of the trade: Canon 400D, Canon 7D, Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS L M2, Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 OS, Canon MPE 65mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro, Tamron 24-70mm f2.4, Sigma 70mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 8-16mm f4.5-5.6, Raynox DCR 250, loads of teleconverters and a flashy thingy too

What is that lady thinking mounting the monopod to the camera body with a lens like the 300 f/2.8 (?) That doesn't strike me as the best idea.

Thank you - my lighting was a little weak so there is a little noise and at 2.8 this lens is not so sharp - with it being so heavy and a little soft wide open I'm thinking of picking up a 70-200 F/4

I recently bought 70-200mm f/2.8L, but I find a little lens play at the camera mount.
It is possible to rotate the lens after it has been locked on the body. The movement
is probably less then 1 mm but still ...
The body is 50d and I have been using at least 10 other lenses including 70-200mm f/4
and have not seen such problem. On Internet half of the opinions are that it is normal and
the other half that it is not.
Is it getting worse with teleconverter attached?

Any response will be greatly appreciated!

Same here. No problems with this minor rotation, and it never does it during use.

Mine does the same thing. I've had the lens since new for 6 years and it's never failed me. I've asked Canon about it and they said it was normal (believe it or not)
