This is a very poorly written article... Sure it has figures and graphs but the article as a whole sounds like some college student's project report. Did Markins actually publish this to promote their products?

Possibly, but it really is about the only tripod vibration study out there... So for now, its the best we have and no too bad a read. A lot of his points are very valid even if the data might not be...

On this point I did some tests on vibrations on a tripod using SRF software and was surprised how much IQ is lost in portrait orientation compared to landscape, even with mirror lockup. I can only assume this is because modern shutter curtains run vertically.

The write-up is not that great because it is a means to an end, but might be of interest:

Some tests with a light pod (Some of the ones with the 300+2X need to be repeated):

All this probably needs more work when I have the time.

You've got some really interesting stuff in there. I wish I were back at school for the access to data acquisition equipments - I'd love to do some of the tests on my own.

It is quite likely something is lost in translation.

Hope you find it interesting. It is basically done for my own interest and edification, but I make it available for other in the hope it is interesting. Hopefully there are not too many spelling mistakes. I tend to be big on info and low on writing style....

The only data acquisition kit is the camera and associated stuff, home made resolutions targets (instructions and files on my site) and home written SRF software (based on the same core code as IMATEST I suspect); this is down-loadable from my site but is written in Matlab, if you have a Matlab you can probably run it fine. Again writen for one user (me) so the command interface and mini GUI is very basic.

I apologize for digging up this old thread... but I think a comparison of what is acceptable from a vibration standpoint will depend on whether LV is used.

If I take my current tripod setup and look through the VF (as I would normally do for composition), I can't tell that there's much oscillation with any of my lenses. However, if I mount the 70-200 (the quick release plate is on the body, as I don't have a tripod collar for her yet) and use LV with 10x magnification, a very small tap induces a vibration that will last about 3-5s.

Without LV, I would have considered my tripod sturdy enough. Now that I have the ability to peer into the image considerably more, just how much more sturdy would a really expensive setup be?

In some regards, this might be the composition (and tripod purchasing) analogue to pixel-peeping.
