I want to purchase a battery BG-E2 grip for my 30D. Do I have to buy a separate battery holder along with that?

thats a good question , cause when i go to websites an check they dont tell you that the magazine is supplied only the AA magazine you have to purchase so im guessing you really dont need to buy a separate adapter for it.. unless ur talking about the charge kit that hooks up to the camera for cleaning...

I was asking do I need to purchase anything else to put in AA batteries or the BP-511A battery? Can I just buy the BG-E2 grip and start using it.

The AA battery holder comes with the grip and no you do not have to buy anything extra to use AA's or 511's.

The BG-E2 (and, for that matter, the BG-E4) are different to the BG-E3 grip for the 350D.

The BG-E2 has a flip down door into which you can load one or two BP-511 or similar batteries, or a DC adapter - no magazine is needed. If you want to fit 6 AA batteries, you load those into the magazine that is supplied with the BG-E2.

The BG-E3 grip for the 350D (Rebel XT) is different - you need a magazine to load Canon battery packs, and a different magazine to load AA batteries. Both are supplied with that grip.

The 511's plug right in. The AA holder goes in a desk drawer never again to see the light of day....

Yes. Just buy it and stick the battery in and have fun.

I wouldn't recommend using AA's though. They will not last you like the normal battery. However, it is helpful in an emergency if you ran out of BP-511A power.

I've read alot of complaints about the fit and ergonomics of that BG, does anyone here have any complaints about it?

no complaints here. i think that it is very solid (not as solid as the build in grip of the 1D but solid enough). you can feel a bit of flex but it is nothing serious and the feel the grip gives you is worth it!!!! i can't even hold my 20D without the grip now..

I don't use it, but that's mainly because I got out of the habit while waiting for Canon to do something about the false "low battery" warning. It was OK while I had it, but messing with the batteries every 30-40 frames is for the birds! Having got fully used to working without it, I just leave it off for the smaller carry.

I haven't had that problem...perhaps its a firmware thing?

The earlier BG-E2's had a connection issue that made it have lots of problems. That has now been fixed (I think)

As I understand it, one of the issues (false low battery warning) was fixed. However, the grip was poorly designed and still appears to suffer from the flex issue. I may be wrong about this, but the many reports have been enough to deter me from getting a grip.
