OK, here is another local waterfall in Southern Illinois. It is called Cedar Falls and is one of my favorites.

I know it's a little blown out at the top, but other than that what do you all think?

That's a very nice scene. Are you using any filters? You might want to in order to avoid the blown out sky with the longer exposure times.

Nicely framed pic and a lovely scene, the blown highlights take away much of the enjoyment for me as I find myself squinting when looking at the pic. An ND filter would have served you well here.

Just saw your other post which says you used an ND here, hmmm I guess as you said perhaps the addition of a CP as well! Either that or multiple exposures!!
Roger.

Bikerider: It was sunny day. I know that played a part, as well - ND aren't as effective.

It looks from the EXIF data that the shot was taken at 12:31. Maybe a different time of day might help. I.E. early morning or late in the afternoon. That being said, I think the composition and exposure are dead on.

Nice shot

I agree with you. It's a great shot. If you could do something about the blown highlights in the top it would be a wonderful shot!

danster: Yes, a tripod was used.

SquirrellyWV: I took an extended lunch hor and quickly drove and hiked to the waterfall. You have to catch it after a god rain for optimum flow - timing is crucial, and my time was limited. Next time I will try a different time of the day - thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks everybody for looking and commenting. I am a rank amateur - at the end of the day and a good shower, I realize that I'm still just an amateur (but I do smell better).

Wow, thanks Dragonfli Spirit. Great touch up. What program did you use and exactly how did you go about it?

I would assume photoshop was used---you can use the magic wand to select the blown highlights and maybe even the blown water at top of fall and just do some basic layers adjustments--probably a levels and a curve.

A CPL should buy you another stop

Nice shot, I like the forground detail of the stream and small rocks, nice amount of motion blur.

On the highlights if the shot was RAW you could easily recover them. I would do two raw conversions, one for the sky and upper part of the falls and the other for the main part of the pic, and mask one either with a gradient mask or a mask created by a colour selection.
