Kevin,

This particular falls is near Ozark, IL (way down in the southern tip area). We have several really nice waterfalls in So. IL.

Woo, that's way South, right at the tip! I've wanted to head that way and see the Cypress swamps, the furthest I've been hiking/camping is Giant City State park.

Thanks for looking!

ba15ck is right; if you have a polarizer; stack that on top of your ND filter to get additional light blocking for un-blown highlights. Either that or take a separate picture with the sky properly exposed to add in adobe when you're home.

Nice shot Edd of a beautiful wee waterfall :)

I see your Shutter speed was 3 sec

Thats quite a lengthy SS to be able to stop down the sky with filters, you'd need a good few ND grads to stop the sky from blowing out.

It's situations like this that your gonna have to leave the sky out and compose without it. :)

Or go around 1 sec or less with the SS. I'm finding that 1/2 - 1 sec in normal daylight is a good SS for waterfalls (and that was using just a CP).

I would assume photoshop was used---you can use the magic wand to select the blown highlights and maybe even the blown water at top of fall and just do some basic layers adjustments--probably a levels and a curve.

A CPL should buy you another stop

That's pretty much it, although I didn't adjust the curves. Sadly, as I'm still fairly new to photography, I'm also new to Photoshop!!
There was probably an easier way to do it, but goodness knows, if there's a hard way, I'll find it ;)

Tkanks for all the tips, comments, etc. to date. It has all been very helpful. By the way I did have ND and polarizer filters both on when I took the picture. I think the camera was set to F/8. I was trying for as long as shutter time opening as possible for maximun flow effect. Next time I will do more experimenting.

Wonderful - the only problem is the lack of anything below F/8 on Canon compacts :(
