I did a random search at PriceGrabber.com today, and what do you know, the new 17-55IS comes up at BeachCamera and NormanCamera. Beach says shipping in 7 days, and Norman said "Limited Stock". I called right away...and they had 2 left. Now there's 1 left :D I ordered it 2nd day FedEx, so it should get to my place (California) Wednesday. Canon 1785 v 1755 test upcoming...

Nice work Maestro. Be good to see how the new kid on the block performs in your capable hands. I haven't been that impressed so far but I'm sure if there is magic to be had then you will find it :D At the price there better be some magic

I can't wait for the lens test. I've been thinking about getting this lens. I have the 24-70L but sometimes I'd like to have something a bit wider without havng to switch to 10-22.

The price is an issue though, because you can get a 16-35L for about the same. Although you do get a little more reach and the IS.

Jojo, it is great that you will do the test: Sigma vs 17-85 vs 17-55.

No disagreement here. It had better be good. Thanks for the vote of confidence, Dave.

I currently don't have access to the 1850EX. So for now, it'll be the to EFS lenses going at it. We shall see.

Guys, see my "May 15" comments here http://www.pbase.com/lightrules/lenstests (external link) . I'll need some time to put the test together (I plan for it to include lots of different areas of "real-world" performance; it could be my biggest test ever). My 1755IS arrives tomorrow (Wednesday). When the testing is done (or at least phase 1), I'll post it here at POTN. Stay tuned.

As my May 15 comments say at my site, the 1740L will be in it.

The L and EX are the bright boys I fancy (hey, not in that way!!) and I would like both to whip the L upstarts ass. At the mo' either would really suit so many folks at a much friendlier price. Even if it's better then the cost/benefit will be an intgeresting asessment, a bit like the dull Sigma/Tamron/Canon weekly 'discussions' ;) I expect the 17-85 to be a miserable three-legged Donkey amongst these racehorses

Wow, I thought that was going to be the "suggested retail price." Not the actual one. It better be one hell of a lens. As another said, it better work some magic. If it does, I may consider selling my soul to get it;)

Cameras: Canon 20D, Canon Rebel XT (converted to infrared)
Lenses: Canon 17-40mm f4L; Tamron 28-75mm f2.8; Canon 10-22mm f3.5-4.5; Canon 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS Sigma 105mm f2.8 macro; Canon 85mm f1.8

Probably.

But then again, I bet from 56-85 it will beat the others hands down. ;)
