Took my EF-S 60mm macro lens and Speedlite 430EX with me to the glasshouses and took shots of these orchids.

Both were taken at 1/200sec and f13 with the flash set to ETTL.

I sometimes wonder if I should try to get the backgrounds in flower shots to be darker and less distracting. Do you think I should? How would I do that? With portraits I just set a faster shutter speed or smaller aperture so that the flash range is too short to light the background. Any ideas?

One thing i can think off Mike is this...
For flowers with white on them,or brighter colours than the bg,take a metering from the white (after you set your aperture),and turn the camera to manual mode and dial the settings you just took.
Then,set your flash to a minimum,fill-flash short off,and fire away in raw.
You will be surprised.
