just took this pic walking around, testing out the canon 50mm 1.8. Little bit of post processing. the lighting kinda stunk, the sun was way past sunset. i would've liked a little bit deeper DOF to get the whole flower in sharp focus, but oh well. maybe next time, i'll bring a tripod, take a few pics and stack them.

Some have said that the bokeh is irregular with the 1.8 50mm, but it doesn't look too bad in this pic. (i think)

Yeah, I would have stopped it down quite a bit more. From the exif data, there just wasn't much light so you're probably right about the tripod. However, you could also try cranking up the ISO to maintain a hand-holdable shutter speed when stopped down.
