I am just getting started doing wedding. At this point it does not make sense to spend the money for insurance. How are others protecting themselves from potential claims without insurance.

Without insurance you're not protected, period. Little Johnny trips on your tripod and knocks his two front teeth out (requiring thousands of $$$'s in surgery) and you're footin' the bill - and your lawyer's bill as well.

Basic liability insurance for photographers costs about $350/yr (that's what my associate photographer carries) - you should really try to cover yourself as soon as possible...

Here's a link to my insurer: http://www.hillusher.com/WPPI/ (external link)
I pay about $650/yr, but I have full coverage, including Errors and Omissions (protects me if I fry a card and lose images, or just forget to take a shot of the bride and groom), and full gear replacement (even if it's stolen or I drop it).

If you're doing this as a business, the cost of your insurance is a tax deduction...

Jamie - your insurance coverage is great - and covers all you'll need. Pity we can't get something similar for such a reasonable price here in Australia... :(

Insurance is a 'must have' option for weddings..you've got no idea when a rampaging mother in law is going to go after you!

I have Zurich small business. Cost is $500 of a 1 year policy that covers a lot, up to $2M liability.

I'm with hillusher as well. Good people and they are very quick with problems. I had a 20D stolen last year and I had another in my hands within 24 hrs! Luckily I always carry back-up equipment though! I even think Jamie and I have the same coverage because I also pay 650 for the year. It's a write-off!
