I currently own a Tokina 24-200 3.5. It needs repair. If the cost is too high I am going to replace it with a new lens. I bought it and the camera (a 10d) used. My question is, is there an advantage to having 2 lenses that cover the range or a single lens. For example, getting 2 lenses like a 28-80 and a 70-200 vs the single lens at 24-200. It is more convenient to have the single lens, but do the lenses with a smaller range give sharper pictures then the single lens with the bigger range?

Thanks.

Lenses with shorter ranges tend to be better than those with longer ones. The latter usually falls short somewhere. One benefit as you can attest to is that by having multiple lenses, you have a fallback plan should one go bust. Finally, multiple lenses tend to be brighter than one mega lens. Plus the lens hoods tend to be more effective...
