Rebel XT w/grip -- needs reboot?

Howdy,

I've been having a small problem recently w/my Rebel XT & battery grip when doing some motorsports stuff (where I'm taking a picture every ten or 15 seconds for an hour or so).

Very infrequently, the camera will shut down, and display just a flashing battery indicator on the back panel. Turning the camera on/off has no effect, but if I unseat the battery holder in the grip, reseat it, and turn the camera back on, everything goes back to normal and I can continue to shoot just fine.

Anyone run into anything like this? Its not the end of the world since it doesn't happen all that often, but I have missed some shots due to it.

Thanks for any advice!

Mark

I have encounted the same issue, but haven't been able to figure out why it's happening.

Canon refuses to acknowledge that this problem exists.

I've had my camera lock up on me once. theres a few different things that could be happening.

1) The grip is loosening slightly (a la 20D grip). Camera locks up

2) Its writing to the memory card, (Bars on the screen) - unlikely

3) Its bad software that sucks...it just locks up if you shoot too many images at the same time.

All I can think of is...live with it :(

grip probably is too loose.
make sure that it is snugly tightened before each day of shooting.

Howdy,

The grip is tight, and has been tight when this has happened to me.

Only seems to happen when I'm doing a bunch of servo focus, bunch of shots, etc.

Have you tried shooting the same conditions without the grip. If you get the same problems then the fault lies within the camera / lens combination. If all is well then there is a problem with the grip - probably a poor electrical contact causing a high resistance which the camera recognises as low battery charge.

Howdy,

FYI, this problem is still occuring. Next time out I'll try and get setup in a high shot frequency area and try two things:

1) turn off the image review after the shot.

2) remove the battery grip.

Though frankly I'm thinking of just calling Canon and seeing what they'll do... Its their grip & body afterall (though not their lens... Not sure if that'll matter).

I'd guess the camera freezes every 100th shot or so on average, when I'm shooting photos every five seconds or so on average with lots of servo af.

Normally you can take the batteries out of the grip and reinsert them and it will solve the issue. At worst, you have to switch the position of the batteries in the grip and reinsert it and it will work again.

And I can assure anyone that might be thinking that it is too loose, it is not. It is as snug as possible, without resorting to using tools. There is no flex between the body and grip at any point.

Howdy,

Well, we'll see what Canon says... I'm going to send the camera + grip + batteries I'm using to them. I'm just within the one year warranty period.

Its been a warranty week for me... Just sent a lens to Sigma as well!

man, sending your stuff into the factory will be a big hastle, but if your going to do it make sure its ensured an stuff. I got my Canon 30D back yesterday from the factory, and they did an "OK" job on it... not PERFECT but OK job.. an make sure you get a the warranty on it. Because canon knows how to rip you off for labor costs, I had to pay 213 +tax and shipping to get my camera repaired...

How do you have a 30D with no warranty?

Howdy,

Got my 350D back today. According to the repair docs, they replaced the Main PCB Assembly and "checked all good working order" as well as "performed AF, AE adjustment". Various settings I'd had in place were back to defaults as well, so I don't think they're just blowing smoke up my butt.

No clue yet if this will fix the issue or not, but I find it encouraging that they actually changed out the main pcb.
