I came across the snake below during a hike and was wondering what kind it was. Please excuse the pic, I didn't really get a good shot of it.

Wouldn't be harmless to me. I'd see it and have a heart attack!

Alright! I knew we had experts of all kinds in here. Thanks everyone! BTW, this gopher snake was just under 3 feet long.

Yep, Gopher Snake, I posted one earlier in the year. It stuck around for months in my back yard. Nice shot by the way.

Thanks Dennis.

Kraig, what do you mean you caught one? Do they tend to strike or are they easy to handle?

From what I remember about gophers; they are hit and miss. The one I caught was docile but they get pissy and do strike. Once n a while she'd act like a rattler n buzz her tail in the leaf litter..

Rum:

Don't listen to these guys. This is not a San Diego Gopher Snake, but a San Diego Cambodian Cobra. The poison is not that bad unless you are 2-3 minutes away from a hospital. After that, well you might as well send your camera equipment to me.:D :D :p

Nice shot by the way. Next time get much closer
