I experimented a bit with stereo photography last week during my trip to Las Vegas. I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to do, and how good the results were. :D

My first attempt, in Nevada's Red Rock Canyon:

Another shot, this time in Calico, California:

Nice first try Thomas, particularly the first. While I'm no expert on 3-D photography, the people and flag look a little off in the second shot which I suspect is because there was movement between the two shots. That being said, the 3-D effects in both shots are quite clear and distinct.

Welcome to the stereo fold, Tom! :D Each stereo shows a good eye for suitable subjects and awareness for composition which emphasises depth. There are a few details to attend to which would make viewing easier -- but that is all part of the learning curve. If I can assist, I shall be pleased to do so: post a question to my sticky thread (link below). Well done!

I didn't even notice the flag. I was a bit worried about the people, though. I was hoping they were too far away for it to be noticeable. I took three sets of shots of that one. I should examine the other two and see if they might work better.

Thanks. I had fun experimenting with this. I did five or six of them.

I'm all ears! I'll take any advice you care to throw my way.

Try this for starters, Tom. Look at your second stereo. Scroll down the image so that the base of the stand in the left chip is resting on the bottom edge of your monitor. Now look at the base of the stand in the right chip. The difference you see is called "Vertical Misalignment". In your next attempt take care to get the same points in each chip at the same level.

In this case the eye and brain can compensate for the discrepancy but looking at this stereo for a long time would cause some viewers to develop headaches.

I recommend you use the free download program Stereo Photo Maker.

Best wishes,

Thanks for the comment, Sandy. I'll be looking for more subjects to experiment with from now on. This was a pretty fun experiment. I liked the way they came out, even with the couple small mistakes...
