I dropped my beloved G3, and this bloody happened!! the camera itself still works, except you obviously can't switch modes. presumably canon uk won't fix this because its a pretty old model, so the only things i can think of are

- camera repair shop (possibly expensive)
- if any esteemed member on here knows a good fix for this
- buy a new one (really really really not an option. :P)

*slowly rocks self back and forth in despair*

You might go ahead and ask Canon if they will fix it. I expect they might as its not that old and the parts may be common with newer models.

really shouldn't be that big of a issue, and since you don't need any additional parts, canon would fix this, though a 3rd party may be a faster and cheeper way of doing it

Call Canon. If warranty is out, ask if they can fix it and just pay the remainder.

looks like that would work. but you would need to know what setting it is currently on to position the dial back on the right way.

Well I guess the position in which is on, should show on the screen, no?

Good luck. From the look of the images it seems as if it is just glued on anyway - maybe Canon glue costs a fortune! :)

My button also failed. The problem was the switch.

My camera was covered under a service contract, but you could call them and see what they would charge to fix it.

Can you not rotate the plastic bit on the camera? If you can then make sure the center turns as well. If it doesn't then you won't want to be using glue there, just a touch of superglue on the edges should sort it. Unless there is another part which fits inside, then it looks like a really simple job to sort out.

Hi xft.y
My advice would be to ask Canon repair first.
From your pictures of the broken button, I guess that two small springs and two small ball bearings are missing in the holes of the normally hidden part of the button. Those small parts will permit the upper button with the notches to ‘click’ and stop in each selected mode.
Although a small amount of the correct glue for that type of plastic may work, it is extremely easy to glue the shaft to the non rotating parts surrounding it.
I have received for repair some electronic machines with volume knobs permanently glued to the apparatus body. It does the repair job harder or impossible.
