Being pretty new to digital photography, and given all the options to buy--what are some good CF card choices for my 300D? I want at least 1GB, but I also have limited funds. Any good recommendations for around $100 range? Also, this may be a silly question, but I honestly don't know...does the speed of the CF card have anything to do with how quickly the images upload to my computer?

Thanks!!

I like Sandisk. They have a lifetime warranty.

I usually pay about $40 plus shipping for the 1 GB Sandisk Ultra II. I get them off of Ebay. You can get the regular cards cheaper than that and they work fine as well-just not as fast. I just bought 2 GB Ultra II's for $62 each shipped.

The read/write speed on the Ultra is approx. 10MB/9MB per second. The faster the read/write speeds, the faster that you can take photos and load to your computer. The Extreme card runs at about 20MB per second.

You don't necessarily need one this fast if you don't take successive photos and are not in a big hurry to upload.

The other thing that you should look at is a decent card reader using USB 2.0. You can upload your shots alot easier and much faster than directly connecting to your camera.

yes,
Most CFs are all made in a few factories in Taiwan, to various OEM specs and designs, so the only major differentiators are speed and cost. however unless you want to shoot machine gun style sports other fast activities, all CFs are fast enough and will probalbly be limited by the write speed of your 300D, not the CF. That said, cards do differ in their speed

Price is obvious. As far as CFs; better quality is not better, bigger is better. That is to say having pleanty of memory is a priority, certainly over having a faster card. You can get by with slighly slower downloads, but you can't feel good about missing shots because you ran out of memory. Thus I would suggest getting at least 2 gb. 4 gb will last you all day shooting RAW or a whole wedding shooting JPEG. Very reliable retailers with good CF prices include:

Go for quality and speed of read/write. I love my 2 Sandisk exteme III's. Costly but QUICK and RELIABLE.

watch the deal websites. the 4gb extreme III was 125 the other day.

the extreme III are faster than the ultra II, but that really won't make a difference in your camera. however, they do come with a disk for trying to recover corupted images, which is a great deal in the end.
