Don't know what kind of snake it is, but you got a nice shot of it. Personally, I would not have used the 100mm macro. I would use a much longer lens so I could stand way, way far away. You are much braver than I am!

Had it been a spider, I would have had to have an extender!!

Hi Trent,

It looks to me to be a racer. There are various colors of them around here and the old timers also call them "coachwhips". I've seen the black and silver ones out my way.

I used to see those in west Texas growing up. They probably look alike in the face, but I think if you could see the whole body you'd think he wasnt long and skinny enought for a coachwhip. Plus, what I remember aboutt them is they have nasty tempers! This guy you could pet. Thanks for responding!

Two very nice captures of a rat snake. Well done.

Thanks Dennis. You and Kraig sound like you know your snakes! Interestingly enough, I had to kill a 5 ft ratsnake in the chicken house a couple of weeks back that was much lighter in color. I guess I live in ratsnake central!

The closest thing to a black mamba around here is a video of the Croc Fighter. I try to keep at least one ocean between black mambas and me!

I believe it to be a young Texas Indigo (Drymarchon corais erebennus), Due to the presence of a blue-gray color along the margin between the dark top-side and the white under-side. These snakes are highly protected by state law and a real rareity to see. Nice capture.
