hey all, I don't think anyone has posted about the following site, so I figured I'd mention it here and spread the word of a great website I've been following lately. It's called Strobist, and it's a blog maintained by Baltimore Sun photographer David Hobby (http://www.strobist.blogspot.com/ (external link))

He basically talks about lighting tricks and writes tutorials about stuff he has published in the paper (and he only uses hotshoe flashes). More importantly, he gives great gear advice for those who are strapped for cash. He just published a "starving student" off camera kit that I'm actually working toward getting right now (I just got a Nikon sb-24 flash from ebay in the mail today). Anyway, this site is great reading and I wanted to share this with folks here. There's a ton of reading available and lots to be learned.

It's really interesting, I like his approach. It is however, quite lengthy, so allow yourself a bit of time to go through it all.

I see the umbrellas he links too are out of stock - wonder why!

I found the discussion about balancing the flash colour temperature to the surroundings very interesting. I would like to get some of the gels that he mentions, but they are stateside, so if anyone knows of a uk source, it would be good to know.

Anyone know of a UK source for the nifty double-folding umbrellas mentioned by Strobist?

Sheesh, another flash site to read. I've started now and will have to finish it.

Thanks, it looks pretty good. Problem is I am spending more time reading than I am taking photographs.....

Its worth it. Real life work there; seems all about getting good definition/contrast for using in lousy (lossy) newsprint.

I played with manual today. I only have off-camera cord at the moment.

Glad you guys are enjoying it as much as I am. I have yet to try anything off camera, since all I have right now is that nikon flash (paid $11.50 plus $12.50 shipping, what a deal). Now now I have to get a lightstand, umbrella, bracket, and one of those cheapo radio slave kits from ebay. But I want to get at least 2 more flashes to really have a decent mobile studio.

Hehe, I happened to discover the Strobist link on dg28.com a couple of weeks ago and remembered to add it to "All the best links" thread last week - I already wondered, whether nobody else had noticed this great resource, but, thankfully, y'all have the chance to learn the Gospel of the Ghetto Studio now as well and as thoroughly as me :-)

(Always remember, kids - as Papa in Kentucky used to say - if ye're doin't right, there's no telling whether ya used a Elinchrome CostLottaBucks flash system or them old Metz 45ers lying 'round in the corner gatherin' dust. And never save up all yer money for half a year just to go runnin' to spend 'em on nifty stuff, if ya could just as well use some creativity, gath'ring 'xperience on the way - since there's nuffing on this world that a roll of duct tape couldn't fix.)

I just discovered the strobist site a couple of days ago and was going to post a link on this forum as it has been a great help to me. I really like his approach and his writing style. For anyone that thinks you have to have a huge studio with expensive lights, this proves that you can capture great, well lit images without having to spend a lot of money. Kudos to strobist!
