Visited Croft yesterday (Saturday) for day 1 of a two day race meeting organised by Darlington & District Motorclub. On the bill were the Northern Sports & Saloon Cars, BARC Formula Renault and the Uniroyal Fun Cup endurance racing series.

The weather was awful, particularly on Saturday morning, and you would have though it was October not the middle of May. This limited the amount of moving around that I did during practice and qualifying, as I tried to keep out of the wind and the worst of the driving rain. By lunchtime, things were just starting to dry up a little and the break for lunch gave me a chance to dry out my rain covers and waterproofs - anyone walking past my car must have though I was nuts with various things hanging off indicator stalks, the rear view mirror and drapped over the steering wheel. Thank goodness for air conditioning!

Anyway, onto the pictures. All are taken with a 1D Mk I and 300mm f4 + 1.4 TC

#1 With such an open cockpit, these guys must have been soaked.

#2 Visibility on the run down to the Jim Clarke esses was not good.

#3 But even worse for the Formula Renault guys

#4 Quite a bit of standing water on the circuit as well.

#5 Action into Clervaux at the start of the Formula Renault race

#6 Much bigger grid for the Uniroyal Fun Cup this year, and the racing was actually pretty good to watch. Here's the pack heading into Tower Bend.

#7 More splashing through the puddles.

#8 Good thing about endurance racing is that you can move around during the racing to get some different angles. Opposite side of the track to Tower Bend, is Sunny In. An hour in, and the cars are still circulating quite closely.

#9 Last one for now. Most of the Uniroyal cars showed signs of 'offs' as the race wore on.

The weather forecast for today says more heavy rain, but looking out the window as I type, there's blue sky and sunshine so we'll have to see what we get. Better go and pull the newspaper out of my boots and see if they've dried out, before heading out to do it all again.

As usual, comments and feedback appreciated.

Cheers,

Simon.

Great pics Simon despite the conditions! - the 1D is working well. #3 has a eirie quality to it - the car seeming to appear out of the spray - very atmospheric and a great reflection of the morning conditions.

Pick of the bunch though is the last one - Ken's got a pic in his post of it the pits being straightened out a bit.

Hope you have a good day today (Sunday)

Thanks Dave. The 1D is indeed working extremely well. I could even chimp a little, now that I've got my batteries sorted out.

So much for the sunshine first thing this morning:rolleyes: .....

Cheers,

Simon.

Cheers Roy. Nothing more sophisticated really than the arm out of an old waterproof jacket and a couple of chamois leathers really. Simple but effective.

Enjoy looking through your images , I particularly like your close crops and the three "wet" ones here really show the conditions.
