Hello all;
Amidst this really weird weekend of racing we have some images from the races at Infineon. The images seen here are from inside turn 10.

I was using the EOS 1D Mark ll with a 400mm 2.8L and 1.4TC.Everything else just takes practice.

Hi Mike ,

Brilliant shots . what shutter speeds do you (normally) use to stop the action but keep the wheel and tyre blur .

Many Thanks

Roy

Mike...just loved the first one!

Great eye mate :) Perhaps you would prefer to call it practice? :D

I've read, perhaps in Gmen's thread, as slow as 1/80 and never faster than 1/500? Can somebody verify if that works?

I will let Mike answer for himself but I would say a lot matters on the what you are trying to accomplish... It's pretty hard to get a fast moving bike at 1/80 unless you are trying for motion blur... but again that depends on the angle your shooting. If the bike is coming straight toward you then it's easily do-able. If you're panning it would be very difficult - I've done it but the keeper ratio is low. On the flip side 1/500 is pretty common... fast enough to reduce shake but slow enough to keep the wheel blur and some motion blur in a pan. Lens will play a part in this as well since f stop matters.If you're using a 5.6 lens on an overcast day your shutter speed may be dictated by equipment and environment.

The Chandler shot was taken at 1/800th of a sec at 4.5 with the 400 2.8 w/ the 1.4TC which works out to 560mm.This is also a head on shot and you need to experiment with equiptment to guage what will work for you. Most of my images were shot between 320th and 640th of a second.It also depends on where you are on the racetrack as well as what the lighting conditions are like. This was shot at iso 50 also. A lot of what we do comes from experience as well as track knowledge. For those of you who live in the Bay Area and want to get together and share ideas please let me know as it would be a great learning experience for those of you who are just starting out and those of you who have been doing this awhile.
