I have seen lenses on film SLRs many times that zoom easily and autofocus, but also offer the flip of a switch to allow manual focus. I like them a lot though because they can focus ridiculously fast on whatever you're pointing at when you press down lightly on the shutter. Is there a name for this or is it common in all lenses in DSLRS? How much do they cost?

The majority of the Canon EF and EF-S lenses have an AF/MF switch which allows you to focus automatically or in manually. There are a handful that are manual-focus only.
