i'm thinkign about an EOS-1D, but i have a few concerns, and i was wondering if someone could address them:

-Price: how much average?
-Having to buy all the lenses for it, then will i have to buy all new lenses if i go to a FF sensor?
-Is it too outdated?
-I really like it, but is the image quality worth it?

anything anyone would like to add would be great

I just picked up a used 1D. 30K actuations according the original owner. I'll let you know my thoughts when I've had a chance to play with it. ;)

Consider a used 20D. It's within your price range and is of much better quality than consumer-level Nikons in terms of build, autofocus, and high ISO performance. I doubt that you'd find a ID for $1,000. 1-series camera bodies hold their value pretty well.

You're hooked on the 1-series body aren't you? LOL

Congrats on the purchase!!! I actually like my 1D as much as my 1D2N.

I took these the first weekend out with my used 1D. I went out with a friend and her daughter, and just shot what I could indoors. I quickly let go of my 20D once I realized the image was not an issue to me.

http://www.pbase.com/angkikee/grace_and_vicky (external link)

Also in this gallery of mine, the pictures beginning with "A34G..." are 1D files. the ones starting with "PU4A..." are from my 1DMarkIIN.

There are many who would recommend a 20D, and I think it's a great camera, but apart from a larger image and better resolution, the 20D cannot match the old classic 1D everywhere else. The AF speed and accuracy alone gives me more "in-focus" shots to pick from at the end of the day. Whether they are keepers or not is still up to me, but the camera itself can do more than I ask of it.

A few things:

1. Do you shoot at high ISOs? More on this later.

2. Is carrying a heavy camera around too much?

3. Do you need the super AF performance of the 1 series digital bodies?

4. Do you need the weatherproofing/sealing of the 1 series digital bodies?

5. Do you need more than 4mp (more on this later).

6. Do you crop a lot? (more on this later).

The lenses will be fine, they'll work in other bodies. If it's an EF lens it'll be fine. Not unless Canon changes the lens mount ;-)a

Price? Anywhere from US $1200 to $1500 I'd say, with the higher priced items having less shutter actuations.

Now - onto noise. Using something like Neat Image or Noise Ninja will fix most of the noise issues. Even then, the noise from a 1D is equivalent to the grain from a traditional 1 series film camera if you ask me. It's just that the 1D mark II/n are really GOOD when it comes to noise, far better than the film counterparts.

Even though the camera is only 4mp, it's a quality 4mp, and the pixel size is nice. The 1D has a better pixel size than any other Canon camera for avoiding diffraction issues if you ask me. The 4mp CCD compares well to a 6mp unit.

if you crop a lot, then make sure you get the main part of the image as large as possible in the frame. Fill the frame! The 1D does have some issues with cropping I've found.

The only issue is long exposures, you'll see the amplifier noise from the CCD sensor and it's unfixable. If that bothers you, get another camera, or go for much shorter exposures.

The image quality is simply outstanding. It's definitely worth the cost if you ask me. You'll be prying the 1D from my cold, dead hands and nothing less.

Cheers,

Dave

i thought about that but i cant find any for my price range, plus i found a good deal on the D70, a remote release, body, 18-70 lens and spare battery for $750

if i got the 20d i could get the body only, or get the d70 kit mentioned above, memory, a backpack and another lens

Good luck with the Nikon D70, it's not a bad camera. I take it that it's not the D70s? Seems like a good buy as well. Images might be a bit sharper in camera as I believe Nikon applies sharper anti alias filters, but beware that it might cause moire issues. Also, the noise performance of the D70 unit (and indeed all Nikon Digital SLRs) is vastly inferior to Canon's. If you're not shooting at high ISO speeds it won't affect you. Also note that Canon's AF is superior to Nikon's AF. You'll get more keepers with a Canon ;) Seriously, if you want quality, wait a bit longer, save a bit more money and get a 2nd hand 1D. It eats 20D, D70/D70s etc for brekkie and then some. That's my honest appraisal.

Whatever you do choose, remember to have fun!

Dave

yeah im thinking about a 20d, the d70 didnt work out...

im worried 4mp wont be enough though, otherwise i would save for a 1d in a second, but now i guess ill save for a used 20d or something, im having trouble deciding between nikon and canon, because what i do now will affect my whole future of photography due to the price of switching systems

how much are 20d's going for? or shall i just wait like 6 months and go for the 1d?

I think the 1D will be fine. I'm printing A4 images without issues. Some of them are crops as well from the full frame, they're coming out OK as well - as long as I've exposed OK and cleaned up the noise with something like Neat Image.

You haven't really said what you want to do with photography. Or what genre of Photography you want to get into. That makes it very difficult to recommend a camera. The 20D is a fine camera, it's just that the 1D is a much better camera in many ways imho.
