Would you by this lense from ebay?

I am wondering if anyone has bought this lense or any other lense from ebay. It's unavalable to my local contacts and we can only use paypal as we never use credit cards.

Yes I'd buy it - bearing in mind that I don't know Oz prices, this seller Urgalaxy seems to be based in Australia but is also a Hongkong seller, if you check the UK photography section of ebay he sells there too under a slightly different name. the item seems to be in australia so there should be no nasty surprises like tax etc. You might want to email to check on how long it will take to reveive the item. Paypal protection is offered so you are protected, though I'd always recommend using a credit card to fund purchases like this, it means (at least in the UK) that the card provider takes shared responsibility with the seller for the goods.
If you check the sellers feedback, it seems genuine. spend some time looking through individual comments and correlating them to items bought.
As I said Urgalaxy sells from Hong Kong also, via the UK ebay site, and their ebay feedback there is 10 355 with positive feedback of 99.3% which is good for someone who sells a Shedload of stuff overseas.
Personally I wouldn't buy from hong Kong - too much can or could go wrong IMHO, but as he's selling this stuff from Oz and you have Paypal protection, I'd have no worries.
PS if you want a macro lens, this is the best 100mm macro lens going!

i am having trouble getting one where we live.....have bought of ebay loads just not that amount of money....and i'm hoping its as good as ppl say the lense is....

That's what purchase protection is for! To make you feel safe, so you spend your money thru paypal and help make them richer

so protection is free for ebayers...i think that use paypay(which we use)

Dearis, looking at your sig, it seems you already have this lens! You do realise the lens you are looking at on ebay is also a macro 100mm f/2.8?

i realise that steve, i added that lense to my sig the day i went to collect it(it wasnt there at the shop) i just forgot to remove it....

Darren, i've been buying my camera gear over the last few years on EBay from a supplier in Hong Kong. Apart from sending items to me over in Perth, they have also catered for me when i was stationed at a US military Base in the Philippines.

D-D in Sydney are cheap - they want $767. Quality Cameras in WA want $825.

Have bought and sold a lot of lenses on eBay. Last year I bought the 100mm Macro USM and then sold my 100mm Macro Mk I (non-USM) for more. Most expensive lens I've bought on eBay was the 100-400mm L IS. No problems at all during four years of using eBay apart from once, but got my money back trhough eBay/Paypal protection.

Be aware that a some of the 'grey import seller' items look to go for cheap, but they use a 'firends' account to bid you up in the heat of the last moment.

fivegallon, did you feel safe about digrev? and will paypal cover it? would prefer to use paypal....however will i get stung with tax

Takes about 10 days for shipment but always arrives on time and perfect shape and good packaging.

unfortuantly they've raised their prices up quite a bit recently, and my latest purchase also a 100/2.8 macro was from BHphotovideo instead =)

As some have allready said,the seller looks to be a genuine ,honest photo gear seller.

Most importantly he seems to have the items *in auctralia* allready which really does make all the difference.Not from taxes or duties though -because something of this value doesn't get slugged with GST anyway (the lower limit is au$1000,inlucing shipping costs).
The real advantage of it being in australia is the quick insured postage and easy return if the lens turns out to be a dud example (near impossible with that awsome model,but you never know).I have bought a lens from a hong kong seller that was optically inferior (it was new) however the rediculous shipping costs made it not worth sending back-it would only cost me about au$20 to return it but then he'd charge me his 'standard' shipping fee of au$65 for another lens!!
Several other times i've bought items from hong kong only for them to go missing in the post.Technically they were insured but the claim times ran into many months

Overall i've found hong kong sellers to be totally honest but the grief involved with overseas shipping is not worth the risk i think.So finding a good seller who has the item allready in australia -like this seller- is the ideal solution i think.
