Funny thing, Same thing happened to me but I caught it right after I ordered the 20D and cancelled the order and then had to wait........and wait....and wait for the 30D get to the states. Being that you already have yours, oh well, keep it unless for some strange reason you need the 30D over the 20D. Just wait for the next upgrade or just be happy with what you got and keep on shooting.

Don't tell your friends you don't have a 30D... and see who complains. The shots are effectively identical... and don't come branded. Smile and know you probably saved yourself a couple hundred. :D

I'm a newbie too. I did the same thing. I bought the 20D and found out the 30D was released a couple weeks after I bought mine. I don't have any regrets just yet.

Still playing with the 20D. ;)

If you were satisfied with it before, did something change? If not I would say you should be happy. That is just the nature of technology. Constant change.

I'm what you would consider an advanced amateur photographer. After I was able to start getting out of the house some, I decided I wanted to return to my photography. I started using my Canon AE-1 that I have owned for 25 years, but then decided I really wanted to get into digital photography.

Being retired due to some health issues and living on a fixed income, it took me a long time to save enough $ to buy my first DSLR - the Canon 20D 18-55mm kit at the end of January. I was really happy with my decision to get the 20D, and then the first week of April, I found out about the 30D. I did call the place I bought the camera, but they weren't doing what Costco did where they let those of us who bought the 20D get their $ back to buy the 30D.

The larger screen would really be nice, and I think the spot metering would be as well, although I'm not sure about that one. Should I be upset, and/or should I be trying to figure out a way to trade in my 20D for the 30D?

If you bought the 30D and then a replacement came out later, you might have asked a similar question. You got the 20D for cheaper, and you can wait till the next model comes out. The 30D built on the 20D, because the 20D was such a great camera, that it just added some things that were missing from the 20D. Now are you missing those things? If not, then you are just fine.

If its bothering you now, figure out how much you can get out of your camera and how much to get the 30D and then decide if its worth it, it sounds like you need to upgrade for peace of mind, I know how you feel I did it and Im REALLY happy with my 30D. Look at fatwallet.com for deals on DELL and use all the coupons and rebates and you can get a good deal like me....$1182 :D . Just do it, if your asking that means it will always be on the back of your mind....JUST DO IT.

It happend to me too I got my 20D and 2 weeks later Canon release the 30D. They are both good cameras, but I was soo lucky to return the 20d after almost 3months of use and get a new 30d from Best Buy. Little lost of few hundred for restocking fees but.. to me is was worth.. I did like the little upgrade!

I bought the 20D on January 2 of this year.

I had a lot of people telling me I should wait, as Canon would be coming out with some great new camera at PMA.

I didn't want to wait, though. I needed to upgrade from the 300D.

When the 30D was introduced, and the specs were announced, I wasn't really blown away. Yes, there were some upgrades from the 20D, but none that would've made the wait worth it.

Had I waited, I wouldn't have gotten a lot of shots with the 300D that I was able to get with the 20D.

Upset??

Hardly...

Why would you be upset?. 20D is a great camera and I'm sure you will have lots of fun with it.

If you had waited and bought the 30D, it would only be a year or so before it was upgraded too. The one thing you can know about any current digital camera is that it will be replaced by a more competent model some time in the near future. The only thing you can do is buy in to the technology that is available at the time you make the purchase, and then live with it until something comes out that is so much better that you need it or you happen to have so much money that you can play with it.

The 20D is one fantastic camera. The 30D is too because it's just a refreshed 20D.

Before the 30D came out there were so many rumors on what the replacement to the 20D would be. Full sensor maybe and other rumors. Since Canon basically just refreshed the 20D, I felt much better and am very happy with my 20D. Extremely happy I have to say.

My 20D is the best camera I ever owned or thought about owning. It's a much better camera than I am a photographer so as long as that's true, I'm hanging on to it!

I love my 20D and when you really get to know yours, you'll love your 20D too!!!:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

No. I did the same. Even the price I paid hasn't dropped that much. The 20D is a great camera and I'm happy with it.

Well, I bought a *10d* after the 30d was released, and the shock has not killed me yet... I just got a very good deal of a 10d with a vertical grip, field-tested by a shop I frequent. Full warranty of course :-)
But the point is: it's unnecessary to always go with the latest equipment. The 10d (and 20d) still is a very good camera, heck, my EOS 650 is still a very good camera. I frequently use it while traveling, 'cause it is small compared to the EOS 3 :-)

just my 2 (euro) cents,
- Juha

Read a lot of magazines before I finally bought the 30D. They all agreed that it didn't make sense too upgrade from 20D to 30D. It is basically the same camera with a few refinements. So go on taking great shots with your 20D.
