Haoda split image screen is soooo cool

Hi all,

Just managed to take some viewfinder shots of the Haoda split image screen in action. (sorry about quality but its kinda hard shooting through the viewfinder of the 350D)

It really makes MF a joy. Just like the old days before these new fangled digital contraptions.
The only downside is that the red focus points are no longer visible. Its only a problem if you are not using the center point. When focus locks and red light blinks you can see the red glow around the frame. You can still select the active focus point by looking at the LCD.

Needs care to install but if you don't feel up to it your local camera shop should be able to do it for you.

Evandavies, are you sure that your photos are leveled?

My Haoda screen seems to be slightly leaning to the left, just the same as yours, on these pics..

You mean rotated left?
Just had a look and it looks level to me.
These pics were taken with another camera looking in the viewfinder so they are not level to the 350D or even in the center.

I think there is enough room for the screen to be moved slightly so it can be adjusted. Maybe try and nudge it over a bit.

The central horizontal split line looks a tiny bit rotated to the left, doesn’t it?

I tried to set my screen perfectly horizontal a couple of times, but the best I could get was pretty much the same as I can see on these pics..

It’s not a big deal by any means, I was just curious..

I wonder if there is any possibility of one being made that shows the XT's lights - Something like this is definately on my list of things to buy

I think it should be possible to make a version for the XT/350D which show the focus points but as it doesn't exist yet maybe there is some technical problem with etching the capture points.

Its not a problem if you use the center point tho (which I always do) and as I said earlier its still possible to see the focus lock blink.

Even without using MF lenses this is a great buy. It will confirm if your shots are spot on focus wise. I took a new AF lens out today for the first time, being mainly used for this last 6 months to MF's, and a few times I noticed the focus was not quite dead on. A quick press of the shutter to get a quick refocus established focus dead on. Of course, if you have a focus issue with a lens then you will see it via the split screen. Great buy and easy to fit with a bit of thought beforehand. 2-3 minutes.

To correct the position of the screen, take off the lens, unlock the screen, then peer through the viewfinder with the camera pointed upward. Tap or knock the camera at the appropriate side with your hand to nudge the screen into place, you may have to tilt the camera a bit to coax the screen into position. Once it is perfectly positioned, gingerly lay the camera on a table, lens mount side up, and lock the screen. It may take anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes to perform this, depending on how stubborn the screen is.

The discount is £5 NOT the price of the damn thing ... in otherwords you save £5 on the purchase price. I used it to get the optional postal insurance.
