Got my 30D and grip today. Once I slapped a CF in there, popped a couple shots, and pressed playback, that's all I could say..."Daaayumm!!"

Man...for me, this was absolutely worth the upgrade from the 20D. I'd have paid that much just for the screen, to be honest. To be able to tell that much better if I made focus or not, or to get a better idea of "the big picture", so to speak. Plus, the menu is just huge.

I also love being able to shoot at ISO 1000 and 1250, etc. I hated having to jump from 800 to 1600. It was like, do I want a little noise, or a ton? Now I can go in between, and it's lovely. I like the ISO in the viewfinder, too. Now I don't have to take my eye off the viewfinder for anything while I'm shooting.

I'm gettin' the hang of the Picture Styles...I'd like to get those other ones like "Emerald" and such. That one seemed nice. Where do I get them? On the same topic, does anyone like to change the "preset" ones' settings to something they feel is "better"?

I love not having to press the AF select button and turn the quick control dial the right way to get an AF point selected. Now I just jiggle the joystick to whichever one I want. :-D Love it!

Last thing I can think of is that some of my shots do seem to be a bit sharper, and the focus seems a tad more accurate. Love the spot-metering, too. Very nice addition. Every camera should have that.

Guess you don't need that 1 series camera then...:)

Forget the 35 1.4, go for that 300mm f/2.8.

Not even to change lanes??

Have fun with the 30d. I have yet to see that huge LCD in person and I hope I never do because I'm happy with my tiny one. Have any photos to share? :)

On Friday I upgraded from the XT to the 30D. It is awesome! I uprgraded because the XT just wasn't comfortable for me. I didn't think the big LCD would matter that much...but it is great! Yay.....some to share the joy with! ;)

Have fun!!

That big LCD is exactly what I don't like. Just encourages chimping, spectator chimping, and lights up the photogs face in low light situations. Not to mention batteries.

As a working photographer, I'm pretty hard on my gear. Seems like the bigger screen is more easily damaged.

I can't see hitting the back of the camera on anything that would break the screen, though. As for scratches, I've already got a screen protector on it. When I'm not getting paid, I chimp all the time. I check any shot I'm not sure about. If I'm not sure about the exposure, and I really want the shot, why wouldn't I check it? Is there some shame in that? Like it's bad to look at the picture you just took.

I wonder how many DSLR's a company would sell if it didn't have an LCD preview screen of any size for that ...

Even the most wonderful photogs must take a peek once in a while.

Congrats Ronald. I am with you on the 2.5" LCD. Worth every penny of upgrade to me too. It really helps me to see the sharpness of a photo alot better

Well first of all, if you are in a dark situation, you don't have to look. When I shoot basketball or any sports with no real breaks in action, I just wait till the timeouts or intermission periods. You can do the same thing in those situations in low light.

Well, the LCD screen at risk isn't that big of a deal compared to other things. So if you don't think its that useful, then why would an screen that's more easily damage worry you? The 1DMKIIN has a big screen, but is built to take a punishment for PJ's, sports photogs, and any other active photographers.

Jeeeeezzzzz... everybody relax.

1) I never said anything is "wrong" with chimping. I said it encourages it. When I finally started shooting more digital than film, I noticed I got very sloppy with my calculations, exposures, number of exposures, etc. I just got a little lazy. Weening myself off the LCD was harder than cigarettes, but I'm a happier photographer for it. I've shot medium format events, and I sure didn't shoot a polaroid of every candid!

2)I don't think anyone would buy one without an LCD either-- I wouldn't-- but I do frequently have it turned either off, or I no longer look at it constantly. Usually I'll just push the center wheel button (CF) for a quick look-see if I feel the need.

3) You can't judge sharpness on a 2.5 inch LCD. You just can't. What you see on that 2.5 lcd ISN'T what you're gonna see on that 13x19 print.

4) I don't like people peeping at the back of my camera-- the smaller screen is a hair more discreet. Just a hair.

5) I spent years as a commercial assistant before going out on my own, and I've seen EVERYTHING break. Twice. Everything. It's all just tools. Like a bag of wrenches. I don't baby my tools, but I have had good fortune.

It's really not a huge deal for me-- it's not like I get a choice. I'm just saying it's not such a bonus for me. No biggie (pun intended?).

Sorry to stir the pond.

That's just dumb. Let's keep this at an adult level. I don't ever use my built in flash either, but I'm not gonna break it off.
