Well between trips to New Orleans, trips to the beach, a wedding, a bar mitzvah, and a few other things, the first free Saturday I have is May 17th. So where would everybody like to go? During the week would be easier for me, but I got the impression most of the people who responded here have regular day jobs (8-5 M-F).

I like the Gardens near the Zoo, but that is the only place I know of. I am newish to Central AL. So, if anyone has a better place in mind... I am all ears.

I'm in Decatur & work in Huntsvegas, but I get to Bham, T-town, and Clayton (Eufaula area) a lot. I also manage to scoot around north Alabama a good bit for work.

Roll Tide! Looks like there may be a meet after the 18th of May.

How about May 17th or May 31st?? The 24th is Labor Day Weekend.

We could do some time at the Botanical Gardens then maybe head to sloss furnaces, then maybe downtown. If we are going to make a day of it and meet at like 8ish.

May 17th is actually better for me. The school graduation is May 18th in the evening.

If anyone knows of any other places to shoot, that would be great. As I am new to Birmingham, and have been to the gardens a few times. Still a great place to go.

I would like to shoot some creeks and waterfalls.

You got to start somewhere! :) I am pretty down to earth. I am sure the other guys are too. The best way to learn is being around others...

Creeks??Not really sure of any off the top of my head that are scenic or photo worthy. We could shoot the Cahaba River in a few places. I know of a couple decent places on it too shoot. Bring some flip flops or better yet crocs so you can wade in.

Waterfalls, I keep wanting to head up to Pevine Falls in Oak Mountain, but its a crap shoot if water will be falling or not. Other natural falls would be up towards Gadsden with Nocaluca Falls (spelling?) or Little River Canyon. That is a fun trip but maybe better for a day unto itself.

Yeah, I do have lots of questions for sure, lol. I do wish I had a mentor, but in the mean time I've been getting very little work done from keeping glued to these forums and soaking up as much as I can. =p

I just have my XT, kit lens and a nifty 50 I bought right before my film camera broke (mirror damper ripped, can't find any foam to replace it with). Also just got the pse 30 day trial to play with (which I am clueless about, lol).

I want to learn a good bit before I invest in too much gear. Bought the XT instead of the XTi because I know I'm going to have to upgrade eventually, so for starting out it wasn't worth the extra cash. Thought the 50 might really make me consider composition and framing before getting into zooms and such. Although now that I have a crop sensor I wish I had a 30-35 range focal length.

I try to shoot something every weekend, even if it's in my own back yard. The best way to learn is shoot, shoot, shoot! Or so I hear.

Thanks for the kind words, and I look forward to participating more here.

Noccalula Falls would be in my neck of the woods. There is also a great place to shoot some Great Blue Herons, Egrats and from time to time Green Herons. You just need some reach.

Ooo! That does sound fun! We may start off small... like the gardens. Try to get a decent turnout and then go there.

You have a great kit started. Smart choice on getting the 50 as your first lens. I think beginners can learn much more with a prime.

I'll try to get down for that. I am thinking some caves might be fun, too.
I used to know some great waterfalls when I lived in T-town. I was a river rat above Holt lock & dam for a while.

Ahh... the more I think about it, the more I'm convinced life has its cruel jokes. When I was young and had energy, I had no money to do the things I wanted. Now that I have a little (little being the operative word there) cash, I have no time or energy to do anything. LOL
