A lot of small general aviation airports will just let you walk out onto the tarmac. My local one has let me before by just being polite and asking. :)

In this particular case, I had given the pilot a ride from Phoenix to Prescott in order to fly this Arrow back to NorCal. The FBO was kind enough to let us drive out on the ramp because we had a couple of bags he had packed for the flight home. Love Field in Prescott is a Class Delta airport (tower controlled) and a very heavy training field with a couple flight programs as well as an Embry-Riddle campus so they're not 100% wide open. I happened to ask a maintenance shop if they'd mind my perching on a corner of their ramp to shoot my friend departing:

But \/\/\/ has it about right. Many small airports are more than willing to show some love provided you play nice with them. A print or two for the office walls is sometimes all it takes! :D

Adding: The key (IMO) is to show enthusiasm and sincerity. It also helps to have some images handy to show that you are speaking the truth. I keep a folder of some of my favs on my iPhone for just such occasions.

I waited until yesterday to send out my state tax. I was in no rush to give my money away.

Thank you :D I have a very sharp copy yes..

Lighting? :p I dont like using studio Flash on my outside portraits, I would much rather position the person correctly just using natural Lighting, to be honest I dont like using flashes at all - I use them for skateboard action shot's becuase you can control the light better in relation to the trick..

My drive through Northern California was quite colorful. The wildfowers were peaking and honey bees abounded.

this is cropped about 400%
