Really nice people/portrait shots guys! I love how this lens is very versatile.
Some snaps from today. Getting cooler here in Australia. :)

All taken with 5D2.

Cool shots guys! I`m just wondering if anyone here sent their Brick to Canon for calibration or cleaning? How much did they charge you? Did they also replace some parts for free? My copy doesn`t have calibration issue, but I would like to send it in for cleaning. Canon says ship the Brick and will email me how much it will cost me. I just don`t want to ship it just for dust in the lens if it cost an arm and leg...

From Sunday. I love this lens on FF body. It was kind of an awkward lens to use on a crop body but now on a FF body it's beginning to shine.

Indeed it does, Bob -- it's one of those lenses that just kind of comes into its own that way!

Don't laugh, my Canon lense hasn't drink any of this CANNONAU for lacking of sharpness!!!!

I'm using a Canon 40D with a new 24-70 f2.8L lense and I would like to confirm from all your experience if my lense is within the spec. (I strongly doubt). All pictures were taken in apperture priority at f5.6 at 1/1600sec and at 200 ISO at about 12 feet from the bottle. The camera was mounted on a tripod and I was using the timer (10sec) to avoid any camera movement. Focus is done on the "R" of SARDEGNA. I took many shot but will only post the one at f5.6 for different focal (24, 34, 50 and 66). What I have noticed is the black lettering is sofr for smaller focal. Is that normal. I would defenitively expect much more sharpness.

I rented a canon 70-200 f2.8L and never noticed this effect with object even further. The details were clear without any doubt.

many thanks for your comments

The first two are at 66mm and 50mm respectively. (100% crop)

When you say you focused on the "R", does that mean that you used an off-center point to focus, or that you used the center point to focus and then recomposed?

I ask because it looks like your focus point may be in the center, catching some of the "notched curves" on the flower pot, but slightly in front of the bottle. I wonder if you can try to keep the bottle at the center, focus using the center point, no recomposing, and get back to us with the results?

I confirm that the focus was on the bottle. I just copy/past the 100% crop image in paint to get your feedback but did not pay attention to keep my focus point centered. Let me know if I should do more test.

Thanks,

Ah, OK -- it's true that at f/5.6 the lens should be quite sharp, and it looks like yours may be front-focusing a bit, although it's hard to really say for sure. Since you shoot with a 40D you don't have the Micro Adjust feature, so your best recourse might be to send the lens to Canon for calibration.

It's hard to say though....I mean, look at the size of the FP, who knows what the FP actually focused on, there's a lot more contrast behind the bottle than on the bottle. Not sure how you could focus on the "R" when the FP on the actual shot covers 1/2 the label....
Use a focus chart, then do real world, if your not happy with it, send it in..

Thanks for your answers guys. In the mean time, I've also wrote the Canon service and will probably sent it for verication since I'm tire of having doubt about quality of my lense. I assume that Canon make sure that there equipment is within the spec to make sure we are happy and will buy again!!!

Next photos were taken with 70-200 f2.8L. To me the defenition is there even wide open. The lettering was really small and still able to get nice definition.

Nothing really technical about my photos. The city's beauty just revealed itself... all I did was simply capture it.
If these photos don't convince you to visit Chicago, I don't know what will!
