Is this lens called "the brick", because it is heavy?

Heavy and built like a brick :) But that's not necessarily a bad thing :)

seems a little strange to have something small weigh so much, but i guess that tells you about the quality of the lens.

Haha. These are my wife's skates. She is on a roller derby team. With the cost of these skates I could have bought another piece of "L" glass!

Yosemite Falls from Glacier Point yesterday. For a resolution test, there is a crop from the lower left.(2nd photo) The crop was resized. If the info is there, it can be brought out. Processed in raw. 1/500th, f7.1, 43mm, Live View

Still can't decide between this and the 24-105. I understand the Pro's and Con's.

1. non-IS vs. IS
2. 70mm vs. 105mm
3. Weight (don't care about this though)
4. f/2.8 vs f/4.0

At this point, I'm wondering what the DOF difference will be throughout the focal range. I don't use a shallow DOF all the time... but it's a great tool to have. I'd like to see exactly how much effect f/2.8 has at creating a shallower DOF vs. f/4 throughout the whole 24-70mm focal range. Does anyone have samples?

I've tried the calculators, they're helpful but aren't a great substitute for actually seeing the pictures.
