The 24-70L is just so versatile. Here's a landscape I took last week in the Snow:

It definitely is. I can only imagine how great it will be with IS.

I'm one of the few people that don't care about having IS in a lens like this. Long tele lenses sure, but not mid-range stuff like this :)

I'm sure this is still my most used lens for regular work. It truly is versatile.

This shot was on a Gitzo, so an IS unit wouldn't help here.

IS is all well and good but I think I'll keep my current "Brick"

Properly more heavier and costs more too. IQ and AF may be the same unless they are improving the optics and quality control. Hmm.....I am about to send mine in to Canon for back focused issue. Bought new too with UY code.

Correct, if you can't get motion stopping shots with a lens like this without IS, one should stay away from the 85L and 135L as well...:) IS only stops your camera motion, not the motions from your subjects. So what if you can shoot at 1/10 second shutter speed at the long end when you can't even freeze your subject's movements without 1/200s.

Just my opinion, I couldn't care less about IS on this lens.
I know when I use it, my shots just come out great.
It inspires confidence and has never failed me.
Unless they make the optics better somehow, you can keep the bigger, heavier IS version of this lens if they ever decide to make it.
Get the 24-105 if you want IS. Leave my perfect brick alone, thank you. :p

I'm biased from what I experienced going from the 70-200 to the 70-200 II. Then again, I wouldn't pay a $1k premium over my current 24-70 as it is sharper than my 70-200 MKI was. However, I'm a shaky handed coffee drinker so I could use IS even when shooting with a 24L on a tripod

Bob, perhaps it's time to invest in a cable release? ;)

One thing I really like about the 24-70L is that (when you've got a good working solid copy) it is just a wonderfully consistent lens. It just works. All the time. I love working with my fast L primes for my own enjoyment and some special purpose jobs or low light events, but when I NEED to make sure the shot will be right on the money. The 24-70L and 70-200 f/2.8L are my go-to lenses.

It may weigh a ton, but that's why I work out ;). I'll never hesitate to recommend this lens to anyone.

Almost 99% of my 24-70L are coming out amazing, no IS at all, and i am sure if there is IS in this lens it will not change the fact that i can get great images with or without IS for standard mid range lenses, even with 24-105 sometimes i turn off IS and i don't see any difference unless i intentionally shot at 1/10 and shake my hand, but with the subject moving, even at 1/200 with IS on i can't get sharp results of it.

Everyone's shooting needs are different. I have no exception to having an IS unit, but it's an extra expense to what will be an expensive replacement lens. Plus the posibility of it being even heavier that the current brick isn't really favourable. In terms of IQ, sure there's a little room for improvement but mine is already sharp enough wide open for my 5DII.

This was a tough one! Handheld, 3200 ISO, 1/25 @42mm while being moved forward by a shoulder to shoulder crowd on the riverwalk while pushing a stroller.
Not the best shot but the prettiness of Christmas really helps.
