Can anyone duplicate this photo for me?
I have Canon 60D
Just got a Canon 24-70 F/2.8L
It has distortion that may or may not be simple chromatic aberration
or purple fringing.

When taking this shot of text 45 degree diagonal to the camera at f/2.8.
The items that are ahead of the depth of field are pink.
Anything past the depth of field is blue ish.

This is with:
Just halogen light.
Just florescent light.
Both florescent and halogen light.
Auto, custom or manual white balance does not correct it.
24 or 70 mm
Glossy or flat paper
over or under expossed.

If you take the same shot do you get the same distortion?
Canon told me it was normal but I'm not sure.
If it is normal is there a name for it?
Will a prime or Zeiss do better?

Thank you,
Eric

eric, I didnt perform the test, but it looks like most test photos I've seen taken, including my own. Kinda the Haaz effect, only with light (for lack of a proper explanation).

This is quite normal with big aperture lenses. It's called Loca distortion and it's normal to see a megenta halo for items in front of the plane of focus and green for those behind. All of my fast primes exhibit the same effect and this zoom lens due to it's close Min focus distance. It's just physics showing it's hand and not detriment to the lens performance.

I will do the same test and post results later.
I agree that it's a normal behavior but maybe not that much..

by the way your lens looks soft to me wide open. i think you need to send it in to Canon. it shuld be a bit sharper.

Thank you everybody who replied so far!
Gareth Cooper, TolyD, for clues.
With your help I have a name for me pain.
longitudinal chromatic aberration (LCA)
Found a few pages discussing it.
Surprisingly very few with examples as simple or clear as ours.
Maybe experienced folks write it off.
I hope to see more samples of primes under same 45 degree F2.8 setting or even a F1.2 prime.

I guess it is a natural drawback of the wonderful large aperture that allows us to work in low light with a shallow depth of field.
A pin whole camera might be the only way to not have it at all.
A small aperture or a distant shot would be far less noticeable.

I'm glad nobody thinks I'm being a so called pixel peeper
(even though I am) ;o)

I doubt my lens is any worse for it or softness since my sample was the worst case I could create and cropped and compressed poorly as I'm a newbee.

Link result:
LCA
Different refractive index means different Focal Length for a single lens. This would lead to different focal planes for different colors. You would have to focus differently for red, blue or green. This effect is called longitudinal chromatic aberration (LCA). If you have a fringe near the image center that changes color if you defocus slightly, this is most likely longitudinal chromatic aberration. This type:
can not be corrected by software
gets less if stopped down
is dependent from focus distance.

Here is a set I am currently editing, still. I recently took a trip to Sedona, AZ for some tradition sunrise/sunset landscape pics -- the usual. I was rained and snowed in the entire weekend. I took my 5DII and 24-70 out in the pouring rain and snow anyway and got some pics. Here are a couple that are currently edited:

Thanks! The entire trip, I kept saying to myself "I can't believe you spent so much on this trip and you can't even get a sunrise or sunset!" I felt pretty awful, but I think it was worth it, in the end. I learned a lot about composition out there. I think Sedona is a good place to learn about landscape photography

You're pretty awesome to have gone out there and wanna learn about lndscape photography, you've captured these images perfectly and i'm sure you have many more where they came from =]

I'm really liking this lens and might purchase it, what do you say?

I cannot recommend this lens strongly enough. I was very hesitant when purchasing it. I wanted a prime only setup, and was worried about all the negative reports I had read about it. My wife wanted a zoom lens, though, for when she uses my camera (she hates primes), so I bought the 35L and 24-70L. While the 35L is the most amazing lens I have ever used, the 24-70 is my most used lens.

The versatility really is awesome and it is insanely sharp at all apertures. It is a great all around tool. On this trip alone, I would not have been able to do a lens change in the field because of the pouring rain and snow with 30+ MPH wind.

It is heavy, though, and after holding it for a day, my wrist definitely feels it.
