I'm headed to the race this weekend. However I don't have a media pass or anything, just my normal stand ticket. I bought one that is as high up as I could get in the probably vain hope that I'll have a clear line of sight over the fencing.

However for those of you that have been there before as a spectator are there any vantages that I can shoot from that will give me some nice sight lines?

You can get some good shots from the upper deck of the grandstands shooting into the pits. Otherwise look for the large groups of photographers huddled around the holes in the fences. It's a dead giveaway of a good angle through the fence. Most of the good ones are in turns 1-6 if the race uses the infield. I can't help if they are using the oval as I'd rather scoop out my eyeballs with a rusty spoon sooner than watch a race where they go in circles.

Cheers mate. Doesn't the Indy 500 always go around in circles? Not normally my cup of tea either, but I figure I'm in the States I may as well see it once.

I usually go for the Formula1 race. They use the infield and part of the outer oval.

here's a shot from the upper grandstand into the pits:

I am going to try to go again this year but it's not looking good for me.

Nice shots. If I was able to get a few with as clear a view as that I'd be very happy.

My only advice is bring your sunscreen. It will be 88 degrees and sunny here. I'll be there and will be taking some pics from my first turn seat. Just for fun.
