Hi everyone. i fianally purchased my 30D :) and a couple lenses.
I have the EF 17-40 f/4L and the EF 50mm f/1.8 II lenses.

i am pleased with what i bought but just need a little reassurance that i picked a nice set-up.
total cost was $2650 before taxes, good deal? average deal?

thanks for reading

Rob, you definitely have a great setup and I am envious of your 17-40L (hoping to get one soon). You may need more zoom/telephoto at some stage. Can't comment on prices though. Ian

$1400- 30D
$650- 17-40L
$100- 50 1.8
____________

$2100 here in the states.

You paid about $300 US more than we would, but that's about right. Sounds like you got a nice deal. enjoy! :-)

Thats a very good set up that will keep you happy for a long time. The 17-40 is a good every-day lens, and the 50 f/1.8 is probably the best buy for the money in terms of image quality. Start saving for your next lens.....it never ends:D

thanks folks, i appreciate the feedback. i hope to be able to produce good pics as i have seen on this forum.

i am kinda struggling with maybe swapping the 17-40 4L for the 17-55 2.8 IS, but it's a bit more $. i think the IS would come in handy for walking around. maybe i was just too excited yesterday (shaky shots) and snapped my shots while the adrenaline was flowing, you know, like when u get off a street-bike after a good ride?

Fstopjojo (our trusted lens "tester") says that the 17-55 IS is having major flare issues, and strong light fall off at 17mm. Might want to rethink that, if those things bother you.

I'd stay away from the 17-55 for a while - not everyone is super happy with it, and I feel it's a tad too expensive. I'd wait and see what the consensus is, and let the market settle, before buying this lens.
If you are having second thoughts about the 17-40, is it just because you think the 17-55 is better? IMO it's too new to decide, while the 17-40 is a proven lens, L quality and build, and full-frame compatible.

I don't know what kind of photography you do, but if you shoot people much, a good flash unit should be on your priority list.

You got a great setup. Have fun!

You know, you have good glass and camera. Unless you find that you need a feature that your lenses don't have, I wouldn't trade them.
Just enjoy them.

ya, i was kinda worrying about shakey pics, but today i shot a few outside (light rain at times) and they were much better, and my headache (excitement headache) is gone today as well.
Curtis, flash unit will be my next purchase. i'll have to do some research on that topic.

Steve, i agree, it's too early for the 2.8 IS until proven and price drops.

thanks again for the positive feedback. great forum!

Rob were did you buy from? I paid $1650 for the 30D but only one tax.
The 17-40 is a great lens but in my mind the 50mm 1.8 is a waste.
You could buy a second hand 70-200L f/4 and be off to a really good start.
Do it right the first time! I buy from Simons in Montreal to save on the tax
or check Henrys ebay sight for good deals also. I was in at Henrys store last weekend and was looking at a Manfrotto tripod that was listed for $160 Can.
Picked it up on Henrys ebays site for $102 US.....Saved myself $40 and it was delivered to my door.

You are going to have a great time with your camera. Most important thing to do? Study the manual and then...get out and start taking pictures!

Enjoy the light. Enjoy composition.

Don't sweat the technical stuff as much as some here might lead you to want to do.

You've got a great camera, and a great lens!

Enjoy.

That's one of the best starting packages you can have. You did well. Don't regret it. Just build upon it, with whatever your other needs are.

If you need more range, a good deal is Sigma's 24-70 f/2.8

Hi,I also just got a 30D but haven't bought the lenses yet.Sort of fearful of spending money on the wrong thing. So just joined the forum to get some advice.Sounds like most think your setup is great. My interest is to photograph infants with their parents and close ups of flowers and some other nature shots. What lenses would any of you suggest? Thanks
