Hi,I also just got a 30D but haven't bought the lenses yet.Sort of fearful of spending money on the wrong thing. So just joined the forum to get some advice.Sounds like most think your setup is great. My interest is to photograph infants with their parents and close ups of flowers and some other nature shots. What lenses would any of you suggest? Thanks

Macros(for close ups)
Canon ef 100 f/2.8 - can double as a portrait lens(160mm field of view- so you need some space for portraits). But the longer the lens the greater working distance for macro.

Portraits:

50 1.4 (80mm field of view. Is the perfect portrait length, but no macro)
85 1.8 (136mm field of view, so outside portraits would probably be the only place for them).

You can also get extension tubes which can turn either of those lens into macro lens though.

mr.clark, i bought from henry's in oshawa at the oshawa centre shopping mall. they are within 2 hrs of me, but i JUST happened to be in the area and drove over and walked out with these goodies, i knew it would happen that way.
they had a package with the 17-40 lense and i got the 50mm for $100

canonconcord, i am reading the manual every nite. and i'll read it two more times after the first.

grego, he said he has a sigma 24-70 2.8 but just sold it, seems popular.

calicokat, thanks!

thanks again all :D

i guess i'll have to update my screen name as well. do i pm a mod for this?

congratulations smuckers2, yes is great lens, the 17-40 from what i have read, and pictures seen, i am in canada as well and as u know from my thread got 30d yesterday, with 17-85, i also got a 1gb cf of 80x, a 67mm filter and all totaled to 2700 CDN $ if you are starting with an L lens i think that is great, good luck,:) i don;t think the 50mm 1.8 is a waste supposed to be the best band for the buck and sharp,

equipment so far, 30d, EFS 17-85, EF80-200, 75-300, cheap tripod.

Hi
I've got a 30D with a 17-40L and 50mm 1.8II and a Sigma 10-20mm and a 70-200mm F4 and im quite happy with what i have and have use it thoroghly
Coming from a previous Nikon background i find the L lens incredible.
Nevertheless stick with the 17-40L as a walkaround lens and buy a wide angle either a Sigma 10-20mm if on budget or get the Canon 10-22mm . Its quite fun when u are travelling with this
I even use the 70-200mm for portrait and it has proven well too
Just my opinion though
Wish i had more money to buy prime lens
Cheers
