When I get my 3rd body, I'll send in my second for warranty service. I have noticed different people being charged depending on what they asked for. A cleaning costs $? I should ask for a check-up only? What is the right wording to get all I can done free under warranty service from Canon?

I'm not sure a cleaning would be covered under warrantee. Never asked, but I'd assume regular wear and tear issues are not going to be covered, and cleaning would be one of those. The warrantee is only going to kick in if something breaks.

The warranty only covers defects in the manufacture of the unit. Cleaning is not a warranty item. Focus problems, power problems, shutter sticking and the like would be warranty things. The owner's manual spells out what is and isn't covered fairly well.

Gasrocks:
The two Canon Factory Service Centers in Irvine, CA and Jamesburg, NJ will do courtesy sensor cleaning free of charge for walk in or sent in bodies. This does not mean VFs cleaned or other parts.

There are now 12 additional Canon service centers "authorized" for sensor cleaning, but whether these added 12 are free of charge I don't know. ONLY Irvine and Jamesburg can do dSLR repairs. The closest of the 12 to Oregon is CA Precision Service in Sacramento, CA. I just picked up the list from the CPS Jamesburg last week. But, I'd send it to Irvine if I were you.

Calibration, on request (which includes cleaning), out of warranty, depending on model, runs about $150 for a body like a 20D and about $75 for an L lens. It's worth it when you need it. Generally, when you have a suspect problem, they want the body and the lens to calibrate each independently to bench spec.

For in warranty lens or body performance/calibration concern, things go through a cleaning check as part of the regular checklist. For in warranty check, you need to be very TERSE and SPECIFIC. The "log-in text box" on the computers in Irvine and Jamesburg have little space. Specific as in "combo locks up with 00 or 99 errors," "shutter sticks," "mirror sticks," "lower left OOF, or "hot/stuck pixels." If you can't say it in 5 words, it's usually operator error (haha).

Unlike the troll in the post near this one complaining of a $200 charge, I have found Canon Factory Service Center staff (Jamesburg) stellar - always giving you more than you're charged for, competent, pleasant, fast responsive.

Edit: Oh, I see you're in WI. The closest Canon sensor cleaning depots to you are Elk Grove, IL and Wyandotte, MI. PM me for their tele #s if you want to check if they do free sensor cleaning.
Jack
