Ok well he's not so much a baby anymore :) But thank goodness he's cute otherwise I don't think I would have gotten an A in my photography class. Children are hard to photograph, and about 300 shots later, I might have gotten a good handful. Anyways, this was done with my rebel xt 50mm 1.4 lens. I think I set it on P mode... or maybe on aperture mode. I kind of wish his face in the black and white one was a little more clear but my focus was off. I still need to learn how to focus properly with my camera. Any comments/suggestions welcome! Thanks.

welcome to POTN.. A good rule of thumb is to always focus on the eyes.. and they both seem OOF.. I'd watch your apperture.. but great captures. kids do take some getting used to. My rule of thumb is just to wait for the shot to unfold in front of you. especially with this age group. they just don 't want to stop what there doing and pose for you..

I'm usually trying to get their face focused, but besides tapping the button a few times to move my focus dots, is there another way to get what I want focused? Also what would a good aperture be?

4 - 5 is usually a safe aperature, and have your shutter at around 1/100, and iso 200 - 400
that should be pretty decent. I have a tendency to use manual focus, but in any case, use the autofocus and set it so the Autofocus focuses on the middle dot, rather than using all the AF points. 1/2 depress on the shutter button, and focus dead on 1 eye, then move the camera to compose your photo, then shoot it. the key is to focus on the eye, as sari said

Ahh great, thanks for that explanation! I'll have to test that out.
