Which is the better of these two lenses? I'm looking for a really sharp, clean image.

That's debatable. I think the IQ is pretty comparable. You need to decide whether or not the 28mm end of the Tamron is wide enough to meet your needs. I rarely shoot wide, so it worked for me. The Tamron is also very sharp throughout the focal length and is great for close-up work.

I was in the same boat.
I ended up with the Tamron and I love it. I think its plenty fast in AF and its IQ on mine is AWSOME.
After I got it I found out one thing on the sigma I woulda really not liked. To switch from AF/MF you have to pull up and push down on the body to change it. Its not a regular switch. I think that might have got annoying to me atleast.
I am very very happy with my Tamron.

I think IQ is very similar, so I'd use brand preference, build, handling, AF, focal lenght range, and price as the deciding factor. Also, the Sigma's tend to have a warmer color tone than Tamrons.

There's a thread with the same title 2 posts down.

I have the Sigma and have access to the Tamron. They are very comparable, with the Tamron maybe a hair better in IQ.

I like the Sigma for it's built. I don't manual focus much so the 2 steps switch doesn't bother me.

Are there a lot of bad copies of the sigma like the Tamron (I hear there are tons of not very sharp copies out there?)

No one knows the exact numbers of "bad" lenses from each manufactures but one thing for sure the internet amplified the bad ones pretty loud.

I've seen some pics from pretty bad copies of Sigma and also some pretty bad pics from the Tamron too. Even the 24-70L has bad copies.

But don't let that refrain you from getting a good lens from either manufacture. :)

This was taken with the Tamron at f/2.8. It's a really good lens. I had the Sigma, but I'm positive it had focusing issues so I sent it back and got the Tamron. I don't regret it at all.. It's lighter and smaller, easier to zoom with (the Sigma zoom ring was very stiff) and it's a lot cheaper as well, especially when you factor in the filter sizes (67mm against 82mm).

I've the Tamron too and it's a very fine lens. Sharp, nice bokeh, sturdy but not heavy. Can't compare to the Sigma, but consensus is that the Tamron is a little bit sharper.

Orchid I like the quality of the pic really nice and sharp
most probably i'm going for the tamron if anybody could post one of the sigma would be nice. Remember my posting above was of the Tamron 70-300 just so that you can see the quality and sharpness

Sigma is heavier and bulkier than the Tamron, but still good to handle if you don't object to the two-stage manual focus switching (some do it doesn't bother me!) I haven't had the Tamron but find the IQ of my 24-70 Sig superb, even at 2.8
