I was about to take a shot when I noticed looking through the viewfinder of my new 5D that something was wrong. I took the lens off the camera body and one of the glass lens inside dropped out. There is three and the middle one has come loose.

It's about 6 weeks old, so do I need to contact Canon or is a simple job to put it back into place. Or should I contact the shop I bought it from?
Any advice please? It will be most appreciated.

What lens were you using that only had 3 elements? In any case, if a glass element literally fell out of your lens, you gotta bring that back to where you bought it and have it replaced. That's bs.

No Ron, it's not the lens itself that attaches to the camera body, but the glass that's inside the 5D body itself. When I took off the lens that was attached to the body one of the pieces of glass inside the 5D itself just dropped out.

Could it be the focusing screen?

well if it's glass inside the 5D, then it's only the focus screen. You can put that back in yourself. Search for it on here...it's there.

I suppose your mirror could have fallen out, but if that were the case, you wouldn't see a darn thing when you look through the viewfinder (with a lens on).

Yes it was the focusing screen.
As you mentioned Ronald that you can put that back yourself, I didn't do a search but tried it myself and couldn't believe how easy it was. Back to normal and panic over. many thanks.

That's possible. It was a small lens I put onto it, but can't remember exactly if it was the kit lens at the time.

Can you even mount an EF-S lens on an EF-only body? The whole purpose of the EF-S mount was to make that impossible.

No no...you can put it on fine. It's an EF mount, really. It's just that the positioning of the glass is different. that rear element is out further. Don't you remember those threads about people filing the mirror down on their 5D to make it accept EF-S lenses?

Ronald, you really ought to use some smilies in that post (or tell us what you've been smoking  )

Anthony, don't get wrong ideas here.
It is not possible to put EF-S lenses on the 5D (Canon deliberately changed the EF-S lens mount to avoid that) ... otherwise your camera and lens could take real damage, because the mirror of your 5D might hit the rear element of the lens.

Best regars,
Andy
