I just got back from Everglades Natl Park about two hours ago. It is so hot, 90% of the gators are in the reeds and submerged.. they are NOT showing themselves. The birds and bugs are better s

Thanks Richard.

What lens did you use for that shot? I will be there for 4 days so I am hoping to get some early morning and late evening shots. How close did you get to these guys?

The LOG was done with my 70 - 200 at 200.. ISO 100 (very bright sun) 1/400 at f/4 --- the LOG is at https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=175318

The small gator in this thread was with my 28 -135 IS.. at 50mm ISO 100, 1/60 at f/8.

I was about 15 feet from the big one (he looked like a 10 footer) and 6 feet from the little one - he is about 4 feet long.

I was at the Anhinga Trail.. entering Everglades Natl Park from SW344st side through Homestead. If you need more detailed travel info.. pm or email me. No problem

Here are some from this weekend. They are not edited. I think when using the polarizing filter I will edit to even out the exposure between what is in the water and what isn't or remember to knock down the exposure a little when taking with the filter. The first one is with the filter and the second is without.

Here is a shot I took at about 200 feet with a monopod and a Sigma 70-200 (@200) 2.8 lens...If you can hold it steady with a tri or monopod you can get some good results to crop...lost some in this one 'cause of the movement...good luck, have fun...and be careful! (by the way there was some chicken involved in this shot!)

Nice shot Peachman!

Like someone else said in this thread, be careful around these critters. During the hot part of the year like this, they move around a lot at night. Hardly ever see them during the day anymore. We have 'em all over here in the Fort Myers area. Rule around here is if there's fresh water, there's gators. Most are 4 feet and under, but we've got an elusive 9 footer running around our area that the trappers are unable to catch.

Those are some great shots everyone. Thanks for all of the info. Don't worry, as much as I want to get some good shots they are not worth any limbs :)

I've been reading the news lately and apparently small, yappy dogs on a leash get the gators in quite close...

You should pay a visit to Orlando wetlands park in Christmas. I see more gators closeup there then most anywhere around. Go early in the morning when they warm their blood up by sunning along the walkpaths. Tosohatchee just down the road doesn't have as many but they are much larger.
