Trilliums are the official provincial flower in Ontario. They are wild and bloom only for a couple of weeks each year in mid-May, so its always nice to see them. The white variety is common while the 'red' is relatively rare.

Do those just grow wild? Very pretty flowers.

Great photos...Trilliums are one of my favorites.

Catesby's Trilliums from April in South Carolina:

Yes they are wild and only flower for a very short time in mid spring. They are typically found in the forest, and most often in fairly wet areas. In Ontario, because they are our provincial flower, you are not allowed to pick them.

Thanks Dimitri, I always appreciate your critique. I like the shot with the log in the back ground, however its not a good angle for the flower.....I'll keep trying!

Sugarzebra,
What species is that "grandiflora"?

Interesting to see the difference between your "red" trillium and our "red" or "purple" trilliums here in the Northeast US (these were taken in New Hampshire). Ours are deep red:

The painted trilliums are white with streaks of red in them:

Of your shots, I like the 4th one the best.

Very nice shots, as is Rubberhead's as well. Your red/purple trilium is what I remember seeing around here as a kid fourty years ago, however over the last twenty years or so they are generally very weak in colour.

I believe its a Trillium grandiflorum or large flowered trillium, which is common around Ontario. Dont quote me on that though.....my undergraduate degree is in zoology, not botany;)
