I can't even put into words how stupid I feel right now. I put off converting from film to digital FAR too long. I had no idea just how much the creativity door was going to open for me after this conversion. I was really only hoping that I'd be able to get as good with Digital as I am with film. Bottom line, I'm going to be better. Much better. Things that used to take many brackets and hours in a darkroom are now maybe one bracket and a few minutes in photoshop! There is so much cool technology built into this camera that you can literally create your imagined shot on the fly. No more disappointing develompent sessions, and thousands in wasted film processing. Shooting in RAW at 16.7mp is absolutely stunning. The detail is uncanny. The ability to alter WB on the fly is the coolest thing I've seen so far. A classic sample here from tonights session (resized, of course, so as not to upload 14mb files!):

Before WB adjustment:

IMAGE NOT FOUND
HTTP response: NOT FOUND | MIME changed to 'text/html'

And After WB adjustment:
IMAGE NOT FOUND
HTTP response: NOT FOUND | MIME changed to 'text/html'

I'm just getting started in digital, but I'm having the time of my live with this thing! To say that my interest has been renewed would be an understatement!

For anyone who wants the RAW file to play with of the above shot, you can download it at the following Link (for those who want to see what a 16.7mp RAW file is like - Warning - it's 15mb!).

http://home.comcast.net/~bob.blanchard/ZR6Z0209.CR2 (external link) You may need to do a "Save target As" on the link.

Above photo shot with Shot with Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II: ISO 100, 2.00, f/2.8, 24-70 L at 24mm Using AE mode. I'm just playing and getting used to the gear at this point. No real serious shooting yet (hey, I've only had it for 3 days!).

Gee, I hope my computer doesn't explode. It'll probably be alright from all those rotation sets it's been doing handling those 120 mb files from my 39mp P45, and shouldn't a 16.7mp raw file be closer to 50 mb?

I'm just screwin' with ya. You're a noob, it's my obligation. Welcome to the digital world. You're gonna love it, especially when it comes to testing. No more film and processing costs.

LOL - Feel free to fire away! Skin's thick over here :) . At this point, it's ALL testing for me. Big time learning curve, but having lot's of fun. I've been shooting top end 35mm for years, but only the basics compare. Beyond that, it's a whole new world. FWIW - the warning was only for folks on dialup. Not tryin' to sound like it's "all that". 39mp...WOW! I can't even imagine how that must look. I'm blown away by this one!

Welcome to the forum!

A few extra tips for those who make the move from film to digital:
1. High ISO is your friend in bad light conditions
2. Check histogram immediately after the shot. Expose for the right side to get maximum dynamic range.

Hi Bob. Lovely camera there. You'll be amazed by the low noise of digital, compared to film.
Hope you'll never need to use Photoshop much. :)

Congratulations :)

Play with it, you'll learn as you go along. Adopting a new system takes time to get back to where you were with the old system. The BEST part: learning is now FREE.

I doubt I would have ever been able to get anything close to the results I have been getting now if I had to pay for each and every one of the 14K frames I shot over the past year. In one week, it will be my DSLR's 1st anniversary..... :) I started out clueless (having been told I need to half-press the shutter button to start autofocus and wondering if the zooms were powered or manual - they're manual, believe me ;) ), thankfully I didn't stay there.

Welcome to the world of digital photography, where the possibilities are endless. There's so much to learn, and its a blast doing it. I'm finding that you almost have to be as competent in PhotoShop as you are with a camera these days. The two go hand in hand.

Keep playing with Photoshop, as it will really allow you to take shots that you otherwise thought were ruined, and turn them into something completely different. Here's my meager attempt at fixing up your photo. The .psd looked much better than this .jpg

Bob, no worries. The image quality from your 1DsMkII is as good as you can get, assuming you've got nice lenses as well, which you absolutely do.

As for 39mp, well, that's great if you're doing advertising or billboards, but your image quality will have his matched, I wouldn't doubt. Only difference is, his image is about 2.5x bigger in its native size. That's all :-D

enjoy. You've got one hell of a setup to get you going in the digital world.

Thanks all,

I really appreciate all the wonderful feedback. The advice is VERY welcome here. I am having a lot of fun with this. Photoshop is definitely my new darkroom. Funny thing is, I've been using it for years....but only to modify pictures for web content, and never as a serious photography tool! Learning a lot of new aspects of it now.

BigBlueDodge - Nice edit! Thanks.
Peterdoomen - Definitely agree. Learning a lot about the metering capabilities now, and will start taking more readings as I progress past the basics. The ISO concept is probably the hardest thing for us film converts to grasp. Used to be that faster film = more grain (kiss of death in low light). I did most of my night shooting with ASA 25 slide film, and sometimes 100.
