My 350D works fine with my main PC, windows XP

Plus the usb in and CameraWindow loads and I can then download the pic.

Installed the same software onto my laptop, windows 2000 sp4, and it does not do anything. All that happenes is the Found New hardware Windows comes up saying it has an error. The requires section was not found in INF

If I manually start CameraWindows it says Cannot detect camera

Doing my head in as I have now uninstalled and re-installed 3 times

   ??? ???

My advice would be to load it via CF PCI card adapter. I do that, and i find it much easier then using canon's software. I use ACDSee 8.0 on my PC and i just import them like i would normally like accessing a regualr disk. ACDSee 8 is an awesome program only like 40$ at most at CompUSA

On my PowerBook G4 i use Aperture to import the photos.

hope this helps.

Check on Canon's site and see if there is a patch or update to support windows 2000. Has it worked before on this laptop? If not, I'm sure it's a compatibility issue with win2000. Frankly, if it were me, I'd just get an inexpensive usb card reader. With all of the digital cameras I've owned over the last 5 years, I've never once used direct camera to computer connection. A card reader is much faster, and more importantly, less trouble prone.

sounds to me like its missing a driver if it cant find a *.inf file. Does it come up with the found new hardware dialogue? Personally, i see little point in using the camera to download pictures so.... buy a card reader...!

I am having the same problem since my last reinstallation of Windows XP and I still didn’t find the solution!
Although card reader helps with downloading photos, I still miss Remote Shooting..

Just a thought, but have you turned on/off any of the services... windows can be royally funny sometimes, you can turn something entirely unrelated off and break something you never expected...

My other thought would be, are you all up to date? and are there any "recommended" but not "critical" updates that you could've installed before but havent now?

Reinstalled OS from the scratch 3 times, SP2, all pathces up to date.
Tried with both software that came on CD with the camera and the latest from Canon site..
I also used 2 different USB 2 cards as well as old on-board USB 1.1 – just no go!

Remember - W2K you need the TWAIN driver while with XP you use the WIA driver. If you downloaded, you may have gotten the wrong one. If you were installing from CD, you should have got the right one.

That's what I did - and when it arrived discovered that it was a USB mark 1 - so it didn't work. i ended up getting another one, USB 2 this time , from Warehouse express and since then haven't looked back. all of Canon's wierd programs are no longer on my PC - I lost patience with them, I'm not an IT person, and I don't like tools that aren't fit for purpose. I think Canon should take all the discs out of their boxes and slip in a card reader instead - much more useful!
