Ran across this shot in a new magazine. With the amount of white lenses there you have to assume that Canon seems to have the lion's share of the photojournalist's gear list.

I'm sure there is a similar thread on some Nikon forum as we speak highlighting all the black lenses with gold rings.

I have never seen a photo like this where Nikon was represented well. Canon dominates the sports and photojournalist market from what I have seen. Now that I said this, someone will post a photo with nothing but Nikon

-Yep. I can confirm at least seven. Hell, there's three in front before you get to the first Nikon guy. :D

It's likely quite a few of those towards the back are also the 28-300, I can't see 'em well enough to be sure.

It's odd though, that's the first time I've seen that particular lens (the first and only "L" I have) in such numbers. It's more common to see 70-200s if they're using a midrange zoom.

Sweet pic though. I save things like that for when people thinking about stepping up from digicams, ask whether they should go with Canon, Nikon or another brand. I just show 'em one of those photos and say "Hey, three hundred and fifty-six professional photojournalists can't all be wrong." :)

Next up: 400/5.6 | 16-35 2.8 | 70-200 2.8 and maybe a 1.4 TC
Wishful thinking: 500/4.0

-I'd wager the vast majority of them are digital, if for no other reason than the speed of getting the images to the newsroom/editor.

I don't have any stats or figures, but I'd guess that there's very few photojournalists still using film for newswork. That is, other than small regional papers where the reporters' "area" is rarely more than 20 or 30 miles from the office. My little tiny local paper has exactly one full-time photographer, and he (well, the paper) only just went digital last fall, switching a Nikon film body for a Nikon D2h (since they already had a stack of Nikon glass.)
