Might have been better if you waited until later in the day for softer light. Or you could have used a diffuser (even a white t-shirt) to soften the light on the subject. Try using a remote trigger cable on your camera. It will allow you to hold the diffuser without having to be behind the camera. You can also use two long sticks to hold the diffuser. Sharpen the tips of the sticks and shove them in the ground and then balance the diffuser on them.
