Hey everybody,

Just need some help. I just got the 30D not long ago, and there is already a scratch on my LCD panel. I would like to get a scratch remover to get rid of it, but I am not sure what it is made of. Is it plastic or glass? Do you think it's a good idea to get a scratch remover? Any brand of remover you recommend? I know it sounds crazy, but I just got the camera. If the camera was a couple of years old I wouldn't care. But It's my new toy and I don't wanna see a scratch on it.

Any help would be appreciated,

Thanks

Leo... ;)

It's replaceable. I think they are relatively cheap and they just pop out. I don't think you will get the scratch out sucessfully. Alternatively, get some PDA screen savers for the future.

This ain't a 'scratch remover' but it is a 'scratch preventor' IMHO.
Made from a clear plastic, cd case, cut to correct sixe and held onto the camera (5D in this example, but works for any Canon EOS digital) with small amounts of Blu Tack at each corner. It holds surprisingly well and is easily removed or replaced. I find that this cover is more durable than the available thin plastic sheet variety comercially available. I do not notice any degradation in the brightness or sharpness of the LCD image.

Leo - I would be really surprised if you actually managed to scratch the cover on the LCD. More than likely, you smeared something on it that looks like a scratch. If this is true, it can be cleaned off. If it is in fact a scratch and the scratch is light, it can be easily polished out. I would use the same polishing compound for both actions.

There are plastic polishes available, but the easiest stuff to find is polish intended for automotive clearcoat finishes. Wal-Mart usually carries such a polish made by 3M. It's sold in a black plastic bottle, and can be found in the automotive department near the touch-up paints.

A little of the polish on a soft cloth can be rubbed across the "scratch". I would suggest using many different directions of movement to even out the polishing action.

No, it does not degrade the LCD viewing. What you are seeing is in fact sidelighting off the perspex cover. It is reflected light from a sidelighting window. The photograph taken shows a 'milky' screen, in practice it is perfectly clear. I left the photograph untouch to emphasise the screen. It is nothing a good polarising filter would not cure...just too lazy to fit.

Try a piece of clear plastic cd case, or acetate sheet in front of your camera's LCD and you will see what I mean.

Will take a shot at 90 degrees to the screen and post it soon as I have time to show you what I mean.

EXiM Screen protectors are the best! They advertise 99.9% clarity. They are expensive, but they last forever and show almost no image degradation. Its all I use anymore. They also come pre-cut for your camera or iPod or whetever other device you have. I've been very happy with them. They are much nicer than the standard PDA-film that you can buy at walmart or bestbuy. EXiM Screen Protectors. (external link)

Thanks everybody.

I am going to try every option you guys gave me. I will try the plastic polish, and if it doesn't work, I'll replace the LCD panel and put a protective cover on it. Well, I'll put a protective cover on it anyway.

thank you all again,

Leo...

Hi Leo,

Please be most careful if you are going to use 'plastic polish' I do not recommend its use, but if you must try, then gently does it. Remember the polishing process actually removes some of the plastic.

Whatever you decide, I wish you good luck and I'm sorry about your mishap, especially on a new camera.

Please let us know how you go on.
