QUOTED IMAGE

I would recommend 1/160 ISO 200 instead of 1/80 ISO 100, or even 1/320 ISO 400 if that isn't a fill flash catch light in her eyes for a slightly sharper picture in that situation.

The hair light works very well.

Hockey and wedding photographer. Favourite camera / lens combos: a 1DX II with a Tamron 45 1.8 VC, an A7Rii with a Canon 24-70F2.8L II, and a 5DSR with a Tamron 85 1.8 VC. Every lens I own I strongly recommend [Canon (35Lii, 100L Macro, 24-70F2.8ii, 70-200F2.8ii, 100-400Lii), Tamron (45 1.8, 85 1.8), Sigma 24-105]. If there are better lenses out there let me know because I haven't found them.

I general would agree with you, but the IS on that lens should give him 3 extra stops of speed though.

as i said, given that 'specific' situation - i.e. she is moving / it is windy / etc - no question 1/80th is more than fast enough for posing portraits - especially if you want to capture some movement of the hair, but i would say that 1/80th isn't stopping the face enough is this specific situation from what I can see (which may not be completely accurate given the low pixel density upload)

i find 1/125 to be that break even SS that is just fast enough to make most things crisp

Thanks for the thoughts, gentlemen. Shot was hand held. Hair light was sun. Fill light was Rovelight 600 in a Ricebowl 36". I did soften the image a bit in post.

Hi wallstreetoneil, can you explain what you meant by this?

or even 1/320 ISO 400 if that isn't a fill flash catch light in her eyes

Thanks
Brad

It looks like there is a catchlight in her eyes. If there is, then 1/320 SS would be above Camera's flash sync speed (assuming no high speed sync was used) and therefore a SS of 1/160 and ISO 200 would keep the SS in the Camera's available Sync range for flash.
