Back in I think '06 or '07 when I got back into photography I bought a Cannon XT and a nifty fifty. I was able to convince my wife to pose for me and try it out. Here's a couple of shots from then.

I think the tight crop of the first puts the eyes to close to the edge. Second is much better.

First shots with new lighting gear...

Shot a series of my wife, using a single strobe. This is the best result.

A single Westcott FJ400, with a 2x3 softbox. The lower edge of the box was about nose level on my wife, who was sitting on the couch. Then it was turned away from her. The entire wall opposite the couch is glass. I could close those to cut down on ambient light.
