I've never done concert pics before, although I frequently visit hardrock and metal concerts.
These guys were playing at the concluding party of our first International G-football tournament in Assen. Pics of that event here:
https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=174146

They're local band The Heaven's Devils and they play high energy rock (speedrock). The venue was a 30x50 metres party tent.
My 50mm 1.4 was comfortably in it's bag at home  so I had to make do with my tele-zoom lens.

It's hard to get good pictures, so I take my hat for mr. Dwight.

Some nice action. (#2, 5, 8) Some are a bit too 'flashey', but overall nice balance between flash and ambient. Can't see the EXIF, so what were the settings used? No 'un flashed' pictures?
Some wider shots might have been nice...

Pics 1 and 2 were taken without flash. Some bright sunlight was still coming through the (partly clear) plastic roof. After the sun was gone, minutes later, I had to use a flash, coz the only lens I carried was my 70-300 mm USM I'd been using to shoot some football action.
The last was taken with an Omnibounce attached. First time for that thingy too.

I don't know what's best for concert pics, so I used 800 iso, AV-mode, widest aperture.

Well, I like 'em. I think there is a clear difference between a "concert", such as this, and a "show", which is what I usually shoot. Images from a "concert" where the music is 95% of the visuals are almost never as dramatic as those from a "show" where the music is closer to 60% and the smoke and lights and other paraphenalia are there for visual effect ... sometimes dancing girls, too! I think the softened flash is better. I like the next to last image best but wish it was sharp. :-)

I would suggest that you prefix the images with numbers to make it easier to comment (even when there are only four, Parr!)

Yes, number 7 is also my favourite, despite the fact that it is too flashy and not sharp.
It's the lens, I fear it has the notorious "potrait" problem, discussed at lenght in the lenses forum. :-(

Hmmm, well, I stay away from the lens forum ... I have enough opinions of my own and I hear they have even more. ;) Which lens?

Oh yes, I know what you mean.
It's like that 7-headed monster, Hydra.
Hack one head off, another one sprouts up.
Even a lens like the 70-200 2.8 IS gets slagged off over there.

It's the 70-300 mm IS USM. It has serious problems with sharpness in portrait mode.
After months of denial even Canon admitted the problem does exist.

Is that the f/4 or f/4.5 DO?
