Last Friday night, while in Halifax Nova Scotia, I had the chance to shoot some amazing bassists at a "bass clinic" for a music store.

These first two shots are of Dave Ellefson, founding bassist of Megadeth and current bass player for Montrose:

These next five shots are of Doug Wimbish, bass player from the 80's band Living Colour:

All were shot with the 20D, 70-200mm f/2.8L, AV mode at f/4.something, at an ISO of either 800 or 1600. All I've done to these is resize them for the web.

Comments, criticisms, yadayadayada...

The second to last one is really stellar. Great expression, and the color contrast between the backdrop and his bass is quite nice.

Overall, very nice captures.

Not being a guitarist I am always a bit surprised that everyone seems to like the images of guitarists in which they appear to be in pain ... a "look" that has been described to me using other terms. I like the second image best except for the Pearl sign. :-)

Nice to see some expression Stevie, esp. the Doug Wimbish shots.

I love "guitar face" shots. I like #2 as well but maybe crop out some of what is behind the musician. You should also darken the pearl sign and it is perfect.

How did you get the angle? What I don't like about most "band shots" is that they are most always from "underneath" or floor and they are on the stage.

The one thing I like about shooting at Hanks is it is kind of a patio so I can go up on the roof and shoot through some openings and get a top down perspective instead of the "nose hair" shot.

Also, I wish I could shoot some with a background like that. It would sure make it easy to do the "cut-out" in my collage.

The show was held in a hall that had a wrap-around balcony over the main floor...

Nice shooting Steve. I too like the second to last one where he looks to be in "pain".

I was unaware that Dave Ellefson was playing with Montrose. My understanding is he has a new band, F5. They will be playing here thursday night. I shall be there with camera in hand.

Thanks!

I used the Tungsten setting. This seems to work best under stage lighting conditions...

yeah I like it, one to remember I think, cheers for that.
I have used tungsten setting on regular nightime/indoors shots before and it gives a nice ambience

I've greatly increased my number of "keepers" since going to the Tungsten setting...

Why not go custom? I have actually figured out what the setting needs to be for the one venue I shoot in 95% of the time and I just set it to that specific tempature, which is 2800.

The venues I'm shooting in are beginning to change. Some of the smaller clubs I won't go to anymore, just because the lighting is so bad. I'm flying out to Las Vegas next weekend to do a two-day shoot with a band, in two different venues.

I'm hoping, being "Vegas" and all, that the lighting is a bit better than what I find in some of the smaller clubs around here...
